Another milestone almost reached as Brad finishes pruning for this year. Here is a lovely image of sunrise through a lifting fog he took while working in our arthritic 70 year old Shiraz this week.
At last we’ve been experiencing some big frosts with a delightful -6.3C at cordon level in the vineyard this morning, which ensures our vine girls continue sleeping for a good while yet. Happily we weren’t in the vines to take that temperature. It was recorded by our weather station. We were sitting up in a warm bed, drinking a cup of tea while I checked our emails and he checked the temperature remotely!
We’re about to start bottling those of the 2025 wines that won’t be spending another year in oak barrels. The 2025 wines are developing beautifully I am glad to report. Like most of our wine industry colleagues, we are experiencing an extremely busy season with the cellar door open Thursday to Sunday from 10 to 4. So thanks to all who venture down this way. Thought you might like to see this gorgeous little nest that was revealed at leaf fall on the western side of our entrance pergola. It had been tucked away in the canopy out of sight. So beautiful and cleverly constructed. We've a couple of university boffins around here at present who are studying bird species at Savina Lane and they told us the tiny birds who built the nest won't return, but will instead build a new one somewhere else for their next lot of offspring.

The cellar door has been smashed lately, so we’re hoping the town has been just as busy. Brad’s got the log fire crackling so the cellar door, as well as the welcome, will be warm as toast. We hope to see you here Thursday to Sunday, 10am-4pm. 🍇

Yes, it's winter and the bare vines are enjoying their annual nap, but there is still such beauty in the quiet landscape, especially if you're up early enough to see the sunrise as our colleague Leigh de Lissa was one lovely morning recently. Brad has the log fire going in the cellar door and we're busy welcoming visitors wearing beanies and jumpers, although it's been mild and sunny enough on the terrace overlooking the vineyard to relax without rugging up. Leigh, Brad, our grand-daughter Layne (manager of glass-washing and polishing at weekends) and I are on duty if you're out our way. Thursdays to Sundays 10am to 4pm. See you sometime.

Caught in the act this morning rearranging all the dry, crisp, autumn leaves in the Tempranillo on my way to the cellar door. It takes me back to happy times with my friend Henriette, who would take me for long walks in the golden beech forests of France's Haute Loire at leaf-fall, just before the snows arrived. Winter is coming to the Granite Belt too. It has been as low as -1.6C recently and yesterday down to +2.5C. Time to pull out those snuggly jumpers! Best, Cheryl

This is what you do when vintage is over! Brad is making Passata from vine-ripened Roma tomatoes picked at a friend's farm just around the corner. I think he harvested several hundred kilos with the help of his mate Rob Abbas and passata has been bubbling away at our place for days. Brad is using the lovely copper preserving pan given to us during a long sojourn in France by a group of dear friends there many years ago. It looks like vintage 2026 for tomatoes was just as good as for wine grapes as the Romas are rich and deep red. Can't wait for some pasta with that! A few days off now before Easter weekend which is booked out. Cheers. Cheryl
