Does a more complicated candle-making process always produce a better candle?

Not necessarily.

Shane McGrath, CEO of our fragrance partner Luxaroma and co-founder of ECOYA in 2003, shares an important lesson from more than two decades in home fragrance:

Complexity doesn’t equal quality. Consistency does.

Rather than adding unnecessary steps, concentrate on the variables that materially affect performance—fragrance quality and load, wax and wick compatibility, adequate cure time and thorough burn testing.

A complicated method cannot compensate for a poorly balanced formulation. Test carefully, record your results and build a process you can reproduce consistently.

Before placing a bulk fragrance order, have you tested how it actually performs in your candle?

Shane McGrath, CEO of our fragrance supplier Luxaroma, explains why a fragrance that smells beautiful in the bottle may perform very differently once added to wax.

Cold throw helps create the first impression. Hot throw helps bring customers back. That’s why testing the complete candle—not simply smelling the sample—is essential.

Would Shane McGrath launch a 100% soy candle brand again today?

Shane is CEO of our fragrance supplier, Luxaroma, and co-founded ECOYA in 2003—giving him more than two decades of practical experience in candles and home fragrance.

In this Reel, Shane revisits ECOYA’s original decision to use 100% soy wax and explains why wax selection has a significant effect on fragrance performance.

For makers committed to soy or other natural waxes, choosing a fragrance oil tested to perform in those waxes is especially important. The right fragrance gives your formulation a better starting point for achieving a beautiful hot throw—but wax, wick, vessel, fragrance load and cure time must still be tested together.

Shane also explains why the conversation isn’t simply “natural wax good, paraffin bad.” What matters is creating a candle that reflects your brand values and performs beautifully for your customers.

Is 100% natural wax non-negotiable for your brand?

Does adding more fragrance oil automatically create a stronger candle?

“Triple scented” is one of the candle industry’s most familiar marketing claims—but fragrance load alone does not determine how well a candle performs.

In this Reel, Shane McGrath, CEO of our fragrance supplier, Luxaroma, explains why fragrance quality, wax compatibility and proper formulation matter more than simply pushing the fragrance percentage higher.

As the co-founder of Ecoya Candles, back in 2003, Shane has decades of experience testing and formulating for maximum candle performance.

More is not automatically better. The fragrance and wax need to work together—and every complete candle system needs to be properly tested.

What does a to***co fragrance actually smell like?

Not cigarette smoke. Think cured to***co leaf, sun-dried hay, warm timber and restrained sweetness.

Luxaroma’s Dry To***co & Hay opens with fresh hay, bergamot and aromatic greens before developing into to***co leaf, tonka and soft florals. Vanilla, sandalwood, woody amber, patchouli and musk give it a warm, substantial finish.

In this Reel, Shane introduces this distinctive fragrance and its potential for atmospheric candles, diffusers, room sprays and body products—particularly for autumn, winter and darker interior collections.
