3 years since i’ve last made a post on this page! Heres an update:

In March 2024, after 12 months without horses I made the impulsive decision to purchase a 4yo OTTB from Victoria- sight unseen! 🫣 Arriving in chilly Tassie with a clipped coat and his shoes still on having come off the track two weeks prior! The original plan was to retrain him, take him to a few competitions and sell him after the 2025 eventing season…

Well, since then I’ve moved for uni, come back, changed jobs twice and moved to the wettest part of the state I could find. I sold him once due to my unpredictable circumstances and only two months later- I repurchased him… he wasn’t in the best condition and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with him, so he sat around and we pumped as much food as we could into him (which he didnt mind).

Fast forward to January 2026, the vision is still strong with this boy. He is possibly the best result you could get from buying a sight unseen horse- he has a cool and very trainable mindset, very eager to please, not too hot, not too lazy, an absolute character, and absolutely loves to jump! He has captured our hearts and I think it’ll take a lot of convincing to move him on now.

I’m very excited for his future and to showcase the amazing horse that he is šŸ’— If all goes to plan I hope to have him out and about in the 2026/27 competition season.

Sixth Sense Spookiness

Many years ago I was riding in the indoor arena at the former USET headquarters on Bridge Street, in South Hamilton, Massachusetts.
In those days, with Jack Le Goff as coach, each rider was assigned a small string of horses to school, and for some reason the one I was riding that day was part of Tad Coffin's normal string. Maybe Tad was away, or sick, or something, doesn’t matter

I was just riding the horse around the ring, and I heard Jack say something like, ā€œLook at that. Denny doesn’t know this horse always spooks in that corner, so the horse didn’t spook.ā€

I asked Jack what he meant. Jack said that Tad knew the horse usually got tight coming into one particular corner of that specific indoor, so as the horse and rider approached, Tad got ready, in anticipation of the horse shying. The horse felt Tad tightening up, even that little bit, and it was like saying to the horseā€”ā€œRed light! Danger ahead!ā€

Because I didn’t know about the horse’s normal reaction, I hadn’t prepared myself against it, so the horse just trotted on by. There are any number of situations like that, where the horse and rider get into patterns, each setting off alarm bells in the other, creating situations that are self perpetuating.

If we, as trainers, can figure out these patterns, we might be able to ease off and change the reactions.

I can’t say I really noticed the big change in Miss P’s body shape the last 3 months she’s been with me in work, but let’s just say, I’m the first day we worked together she looked and was the size of Zena…

And look at her now šŸ˜ wowee. The muscle tone!!

And we also finally have our first endurance ride latched on and working hard towards šŸ’Ŗ bring on Wattlewood on the 4th!

Do you think Zena would’ve been giving Miss P any endurance tips? Being retired from it for 2 years now, but will never forget her best and last performance at the Lockhart Challenge 120km šŸ˜ with 1st place junior, best conditioned and best managed, along with 6th across the line in 9 hours 13 minutes

the beautiful girl is officially sold šŸ’• though she doesn’t know why she got dragged out of the loveliness of her nap to be half drowned, I’m sure she and her new family are going to cherish her, exactly what she needs.

And some gorgeous gorgeous photos that just give this amazing horse so much justice šŸ’• the last is my favourite, the way she latched onto her next jump and is rocking herself back ready for take off

I forget to post to this page sometimes so instead of bulk posting- here’s a recap of last week!

• Miss P and I went adventuring and completed 12km, along with me going head first accidentally in the river pictured after choosing the wrong spot to enter said river šŸ™ˆ

• Cougs and I ventured to Smithton and joined CHPC in their rally and learnt heaps and had fun!

• Miss P woke up deciding she could gallop the 100 miler and had her arab turned on to spook at everything, wasn’t paying attention to where she was going and had to turn into an eventer to get out of it……..

• We bought baby goats!!! Benny (Anglo Nubian x Mini) and Buttercup (Saanen x Mini)

•Miss P had a chill farm hack

• Cougs and I went to Fernpark ODE and placed 4th in the grade 3- earning us a trials qualifier!

What a week…
