When the risk of wildfires, called bushfires in Australia, is high, State Governments can declare days of TOTAL FIRE BAN across all or part of their states. So if the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting hot weather, high winds and very dry conditions, a FIRE BAN can be declared, and it becomes illegal to light a fire outdoors or operate certain types of machinery and equipment. For example, welding is not allowed outdoors. This helps to reduce the risk of fires.
Severe penalties apply to those who break the rules.
