New Episode Released: The Mistakes That Made Us

When people look at a successful business, they often see the wins but what they don't see are the hiring mistakes, the expensive consultants, the growth challenges, the sleepless nights, and the countless decisions that didn't go quite to plan.

In our latest episode of the Practice on Purpose podcast, Jamie Hart and I (Dr Catherine Hart) get honest about some of the biggest mistakes we've made while building Succoris Psychology Group and the lessons those experiences taught us.

We discuss:

✅ Why we've stopped viewing mistakes as "failures"

✅ The hiring decisions we'd make differently today

✅ The dangers of growing too quickly

✅ The costly lessons learned from consultants and marketing companies

✅ Why values and culture should drive every major business decision

✅ What we'd do differently if we were starting again

If you're a practice owner, aspiring business leader, or someone thinking about starting your own business, this episode is for you.

One of the biggest lessons we've learned is that mistakes aren't something to be ashamed of, they're often the price of growth.

The Power of "Both/And" Thinking

One of the core concepts in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is dialectics.

A dialectic refers to the idea that two seemingly opposite things can both be true at the same time.

Many of us naturally fall into "either/or" thinking:

❌ I'm either succeeding or failing.
❌ My client is either motivated or resistant.
❌ I either handled that session well or I didn't.

DBT challenges this way of thinking by encouraging us to look for the middle path:

✅ I made mistakes AND I did some things well.
✅ My client wants change AND feels scared of it.
✅ I can accept myself as I am AND work towards growth.

For individuals experiencing emotional dysregulation, black-and-white thinking can intensify distress, conflict, shame, and hopelessness. Learning to think dialectically creates flexibility, balance, and compassion.

As clinicians, dialectics can also help us navigate complexity. We can validate a client's experience while encouraging change. We can acknowledge suffering while maintaining hope.

This balance between acceptance and change sits at the heart of DBT.

The 3 DBT States of Mind

One of the most practical concepts I teach from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is the idea of the three mind states: Emotional Mind, Rational Mind, and Wise Mind.

Many of us can probably recognise times when we've been operating from our Emotional Mind. In this state, emotions drive our decisions and behaviours. While emotions provide important information, they can sometimes lead us to react impulsively, become overwhelmed, or struggle to see the bigger picture.

At other times, we may find ourselves in Rational (sometimes called Reasonable) Mind. Here, logic, facts, and problem-solving take centre stage. Rational Mind can be incredibly helpful, but when relied upon exclusively, it can leave us disconnected from our emotions, values, and relationships.

DBT suggests that neither Emotional Mind nor Rational Mind are 'bad' per se but when we act from these states we aren't acting in a balanced way that is taking in all the pieces of the situation.

Instead, the goal is to access Wise Mind — the place where emotion and logic work together. Wise Mind allows us to acknowledge our feelings while also considering the facts, helping us make decisions that are balanced, effective, and aligned with our values.

For many clients, learning to recognise these different mind states can be transformative. For clinicians, understanding and teaching these concepts can become a powerful tool for supporting emotion regulation, decision-making, and psychological flexibility.

If you've been wanting to learn more about DBT but aren't sure where to start, I'm excited to be facilitating a small-group introduction to DBT for early career clinicians and mental health professionals.

Applications Opening Soon: The 2027 Succoris Clinical Registrar Scholarship

When we launched the Succoris Clinical Registrar Scholarship, our vision was simple: remove barriers and create opportunities for talented psychologists to access high-quality training, supervision, and support throughout their registrar journey.

✅ The challenges I experienced working as a contractor early in my career

✅ Why Succoris has chosen an employment model—and what we've learned along the way

Whether you're starting a practice, scaling a team, or reviewing your current workforce arrangements, this episode will give you plenty to think about.
