Sometimes people feel guilty admitting that the work feels heavy.

But acknowledging it does not make someone less capable or less caring.

It makes them human.

That’s why this course focuses on realistic self care and professional boundaries specifically within disability support settings- not generic wellness advice.

Created by Georgia Dale, Principal Behaviour Support Practitioner and Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, this course was designed to support workers with practical tools that help protect wellbeing while continuing to provide quality, compassionate support.

A helpful reminder 💙

Regulation often comes before reasoning.

When someone is distressed, they may not be able to process information the same way they normally would.

In those moments, support might look like:

Reducing our demands and speech

offering reassurance,

supporting more space

or simply staying calm and present.

This applies to children, teenagers, and adults alike.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer is not correction but safety and understanding first.

When behaviours of harm happen, it’s easy to focus only on what’s happening in the moment.

But often, the real story starts earlier.

Unexpected changes.
Sensory overwhelm.
Fatigue.
Stress.
Pain.
Feeling unsafe or misunderstood.

These things can all act as triggers- and they’re different for every person.

Understanding triggers helps shift the focus from:
“What’s wrong with this person?”
to:
“What might this person be experiencing?”

Sometimes simple observations can make a meaningful difference:
✔ noticing patterns
✔ understanding routines
✔ recognising overwhelm
✔ tracking basic needs
✔ listening to the individual’s experience

Our latest blog explores why understanding triggers is one of the most important first steps in behaviour support.

For many people, especially those with a disability, trauma backgrounds, or sensory differences, supportive environments can reduce stress and improve wellbeing far more effectively than simply expecting the person to change.

Even small environmental adjustments can make a very big difference.

Our latest blog explores how environments influence behaviour, and why behaviour support should focus on understanding the environment, not just the individual.

Every person has different:

strengths

communication styles

sensory needs

routines

Relationships needs,

goals

and ways of experiencing the world.

That’s why our approach is highly individualised.

Sometimes meaningful support looks like helping someone build independence.

Sometimes it looks like adjusting the environment around them.

Sometimes it’s simply making sure the person feels safe, heard, and included in decisions about their own life.

Person-centred support means the individual stays at the centre of the process- always.

21/05/2026

Sometimes harmful behaviour is due to stress and not having coping skills, sometimes it’s exhaustion.
Sometimes it’s sensory overload, uncertainty, or other unmet needs.

One of the most important parts of behaviour support is slowing down enough to ask:

“What might this person be experiencing right now?”

At Mindset Support, we focus on understanding the person behind the behaviour, because meaningful support starts with curiosity, safety, and connection, not assumptions.

If you’re feeling exhausted in this work…
it might not be the workload.
It might be your boundaries and your self care has fallen off a cliff. You need a plan, a call to action and support.

When boundaries are unclear, you might notice:
• you can’t switch off after work
• you replay conversations in your head
• you feel responsible for “fixing” everything
• you say yes, even when you’re already stretched

And slowly, it adds up.
This is where burnout starts, not all at once, but over time.

The truth is:
👉 You can care deeply
👉 Be compassionate
👉 Build strong relationships

And still have clear boundaries.
In fact, you need them.
Because boundaries aren’t a barrier to good support.
They’re what make good support possible. https://members.mindsetsupport.com.au/professional-boundaries-self-care-disability-supports/
