One of the hardest parts about running a business is feeling like nobody cares as much as you do. I can end all that now by telling you that they don’t, and they never will

You obsess over every booking, every enquiry, every cancellation, every post, every review and every dollar. You check your phone more than you’d like to admit and spend far too much time wondering if what you’re doing is actually working.

Meanwhile, your clients are just trying to get through their week.

That’s why so many business owners become frustrated with their marketing. They post about their business and hear crickets.

The reality is that most people aren’t sitting around thinking about your business, they’re thinking about themselves.

They’re thinking about the dog they can’t brush properly. The dog that’s pulling on walks. The holiday they’re trying to organise. The dog that’s overdue for a groom. The problem they need solved.

Instead of asking, ‘How do I get people to care about my business or my content?’ start asking, ‘How do I make this relevant to the person reading it?’

Because people don’t pay attention to businesses, they pay attention to things that feel familiar, helpful, relatable or useful to them.

Before you hit post this week, ask yourself one question: If I was my ideal client, would I actually care about this?

Insurance is one of those things most pet business owners know they should have, but very few people stop and think about what happens if they actually need it.

We tend to think claims happen to other people, the careless groomer, the reckless dog walker, the business that cuts corners.

The reality is that many claims come from businesses doing everything right (even me)

A dog slips a lead, a pet gets injured, a client alleges negligence, an employee is hurt at work, equipment causes damage, a social media post sparks a dispute. Sometimes it isn’t even about being at fault, it’s about having the resources to defend yourself when something goes wrong.

I’ve spoken to business owners who assumed they were covered when they weren’t, and others who discovered too late that the cheapest policy wasn’t necessarily the right one.

One claim can mean legal fees, compensation, lost income, reputational damage and months of stress. For some businesses, it can genuinely be the difference between surviving and closing the doors.

That’s why I sat down with Pet Business International to have a very real conversation about insurance, risk, liability and what pet professionals need to know before they find themselves in that position.

Whether you’re a solo operator, a home based business or managing a growing team, this episode is worth your time.

The viral ‘dot’ cake is everywhere right now right

It’s not a revolutionary recipe, it’s not a brand new technique and it is not some secret ingredient nobody has ever heard of before.

It’s a vanilla cake with sprinkles ffs 🤣

Yet people are buying them, making them, posting them, and talking about them. There’s a lesson in that

So many business owners spend months waiting until they have something completely unique before they put it out into the world. They convince themselves they need a never seen before service, a groundbreaking offer, or a level of perfection that nobody else has achieved.

Meanwhile, the dot cake is selling out and is everywhere

Not because it’s complicated, but because it’s simple. People understand it instantly and they know exactly what they’re getting. It photographs well, it feels familiar and it doesn’t need a ten minute explanation.

Simple wins far more often than clever 🤯

Your clients don’t need to be blown away by how innovative you are. They need to quickly understand what you do, who it’s for, and why they should care.

The businesses that grow aren’t always the ones with the most revolutionary ideas. More often, they’re the ones willing to take something simple, package it well, and consistently put it in front of people.

Don’t let the search for extraordinary stop you from executing something ordinary really well 😌

If you’re on my newsletter list, you’re about to get a pretty tough announcement from me tonight. If you’re not, you’ll hear about it in a week or so

I’m not going anywhere, but things are going to look intentionally different 🫶🏼

More for you, more for me, yet better balance 🌿😌

Time and time again I will put my own advice into action and IT WORKS.

I will say though, this is a complete consequence of HARD WORK. Things like this don’t just easily happen with insider knowledge. You use the insider knowledge to lock in and make it happen

The difference is a lot of people lock in with no clue and no guidance. So which are you?

I love seeing businesses get specific with their marketing, I really do… Trying to speak to everyone rarely works. The businesses that stand out know exactly who they’re talking to and aren’t afraid to say it.

However, would your ideal client actually describe themselves using the words you’ve chosen? I recently came across a business targeting ‘fussy dog mums’

I completely understood who they were trying to attract. They’re not trying to attract every dog owner. They’re trying to attract the people who care deeply about their dog’s wellbeing, who want personalised service, who pay attention to the details and who are willing to invest in quality care.

But would those people actually call themselves fussy?? … Probably not.

Most would describe themselves as:

• Caring
• Devoted
• Attentive
• Particular
• Thoughtful
• Conscientious
• Dedicated
• Invested
• Quality focused
• Discerning
• Selective
• Passionate about their dog’s wellbeing
• Someone who treats their dog like family

The idea isn’t to make your marketing broader, it should be to make it more accurate. The best marketing helps them recognise themselves in your message

So before you write your next headline, bio or website tagline, ask yourself this; Am I using the words I would use to describe my ideal client, or the words they would use to describe themselves?

Sometimes the difference between a message that converts and one that doesn’t comes down to a single word

One of the biggest mindset shifts I ever made in business was realising that I couldn’t save my way to the goals I wanted 🪴

Of course, being financially responsible matters. You should know your numbers, avoid unnecessary spending and run a healthy business

But there comes a point where cutting costs isn’t the answer anymore. Most business owners spend far too much time trying to save $50 and not nearly enough time figuring out how to make an extra $500

Growth comes from; increasing revenue
More leads
Better conversions
Higher price
Stronger offers
More visibility

Instead of constantly asking where you can spend less, start asking where you can create more opportunity.
That single shift can completely change the trajectory of your business

What’s one thing you could do this week to make more money rather than simply save it 😌

Handling a price critique should be that simple

No apologies, no ‘I’m so sorry’, no ‘I can do you a better deal’. Simply a quick confident response that gives some insight and enforces that I won’t be backing down

Now, from fear of losing him as a client, from fear of losing that minuscule income, most people will bend here. Do not forget - you actually need to be able to sustain your business and life. Otherwise my suggestion to you is to start a charity instead

Sure I could keep the prices low, but I want the salon to be able to grow and actually pay the bills (of which we have MANY) so do I mind that we are ‘too expensive’ for one man and his two dogs - honestly, not really. There are plenty of other options for him, just like there are many other clients out there for us.

Also I do wonder if this person would walk into Mercedes, declare the cars are too expensive, and leave. Would he walk into Hermes’ and declare the bags are too expensive and leave? I HIGHLY doubt it.

It’s not that WE are overpriced. We simply are not for everyone, and if that causes some people to have an actual reaction rather than moving along, well that says more about them than it ever will us, and more than it ever will YOU.

You’re not too expensive, you’ve triggered the wrong people 💁🏻‍♀️

I spent almost 10 years building a pet business from the ground up

The early mornings, the late nights, the staffing issues, the cancellations, the difficult clients, the marketing, the mistakes, the wins and everything in between.

That business grew into a multi six-figure company before I successfully sold it and moved into mentoring other pet business owners and purchasing another pet business

Now I help pet sitters, dog walkers, groomers, trainers and pet care professionals build stronger, more profitable businesses without spending years figuring it all out the hard way.

If you’re tired of wondering where your next enquiry is coming from, struggling to convert leads into paying clients, or feeling like you’ve hit a ceiling in your business, it might be time to get some support.

Because the businesses that grow aren’t always the most talented.

They’re usually the ones willing to learn faster, implement faster and stop trying to do everything alone.

If you’re ready to get serious about growing your pet business, send me a message and let’s have a chat.
