Mandarins are sweet, apples are in season, but transport costs are starting to bite.

This week’s Melbourne wholesale fruit and veg market has a solid seasonal fruit story, with mandarins eating well, apples and pears in full swing, melons improving and citrus starting to open up.

Imperial and Afourer mandarins are eating well, Sunraysia navels are starting to soften in price as flavour improves, and the main apple varieties are now in season.

The catch is cost. Apples and pears are dearer than last year, with lighter crops, earlier weather challenges and higher fuel and transport costs all feeding into pricing.

On the vegetable side, Werribee broccoli is in great shape, Queensland capsicums are finally moving properly, and there are plenty of excellent Australian greens available.

Strawberries, blueberries, mushrooms and potatoes still need careful buying, with supply and quality pressure sitting across those lines.

Melbourne’s nice weather is helping lettuce… but not the mushrooms.

This week’s market has a proper autumn split, with some lines loving the mild conditions and others waiting for the season to get its act together.

Lettuce and leafy lines have eased, while capsicums, broccoli, eggplant, apples, pears, pomegranates, root vegetables and avocados are all in a good position.

Mandarins are the citrus highlight, melons have improved, and cherry and truss tomatoes have moved into a better spot after recent pressure.

On the tighter side, mushrooms are still short, wild mushrooms need colder and wetter weather to properly kick off, asparagus and blueberries are expensive, and oranges are still going through their awkward seasonal changeover.

Melbourne’s market is shifting north… and prices are starting to follow.

Some lines are easing, others are tightening, and the bigger shift is happening underneath it all.

Strawberries, mandarins and cucumbers are improving, while broccoli, apples and root vegetables continue to offer strong value.

At the same time, mushrooms, citrus, melons and potatoes are starting to feel the squeeze as supply moves north.

With more produce coming out of Queensland and northern regions, fuel and fertiliser costs are beginning to show through in pricing.
