I hate to girlboss you, but here’s your reminder (affirmation, permission slip, whatever works for you) to start winding down for the weekend from Friday morning. There’s always another Monday and always more work to do.
(Yes, you )
Today was my first Friday back to my usual work routine. I find that I’m better able to switch off for the weekend if I start the wind down on Friday. If I leave it to Friday 5pm to start checking out, I’m way more likely to end up working late and still working throughout the weekend.
That’s why on Fridays I work somewhere fun and chill like a cafe or pub, and just focus on knocking over the most essential tasks. That means taking any scheduled meetings and making sure my team is set up to support our clients.
I thought of it as my summer Fridays, like businesses who let their team knock off at 3pm on Fridays throughout the summer.
But sent an email newsletter last night that explains why this works for me. The newsletter is on why people with ADHD struggle to get to sleep (me! I was awake until 3am this morning despite being in bed since 11pm) but I think it’s relevant when it comes to winding down work to power off over the weekend.
ADHD means that my brain (and potential yours to) doesn’t turn off just because it’s time to log off work for the day or for the weekend.
Dopamine regulation, delayed circadian rhythms, and time blindness all have a roll to play. But the breakthrough for me in the newsletter was a name for something I’ve always struggled with.
Neurological inertia.
defines this as the tendency of the brain to resist changes or new stimuli, leading to difficulty in initiating or adapting to new actions or thoughts.
This makes so much sense to me!!! The same transition from awake to rest that ADHD makes difficult, feels like the transition from work to rest too. Or perhaps, working to not working.
I want to power down but with my brain, it’s not intuitive or natural to know how to do that.
So, there’s some science (I guess! I’m no professional, I just have lived experience) to back up the girlboss affirmation.
