In almost every health business marketing lecture I have given over the past 20 years - I ask this question of the attendees?

Where do most of your new clients come from?

Should open the floodgates to lots of responses.

Yet the most common reply I get is...

"Word of mouth"

Whilst this may be true - the "word of mouth" reply opens up some issues:

- do they even track the referral source for their new clients?
- if it is a word of mouth referral - are they tracking (and maybe rewarding) the referrer for their kind recommendation?
- do they use any other marketing (paid or free) to generate new clients?

Interestingly enough, when I hear a practice owner say their new patient referrals mostly come from WOM - it is almost like I am watching a subtitled film - where the subtitle in this example reads:

"I don't have a marketing plan".

This is why I have decided to make November - "Patient Attraction Month" at Practiceology.

I always told my "Beautiful Wife Helen" (BWH) that I would make some changes to my work structure when I turn 60.

Well, I turned 60 back in June and here we are in November, and I am still working.

So what happened?

Well - a couple of things...

Our youngest daughter (4 of 4) had a little baby boy late last year (our first Grandson) - which sent Helen into a spending frenzy the likes of which I have never seen.

If "4 of 4" needed a pram - we were instantly up for 2 prams - once for her place and one for ours.

Same applied to car seats, strollers, clothes, high chairs, cots....... the list was endless.

So while the purse strings were loosened in response to the new arrival, it made sense to keep working for a while.

The other thing that happened about this time, was a greater sense of enjoyment from the work I was doing with health business owners.

Don't get me wrong - I have always loved helping health business owners run better businesses.

However, over the past 6 to 12 months - my enjoyment has dramatically increased.

This may be in line with some major changes to how I run the Practiceology program.

We created 3 different membership level - to cater for a wider range of budgets and owner needs.

So we were able to help more people.

We ramped up our weekly VIP roundtables - which are always fun and informative - and also added some amazing guest experts.

Let’s do the math:

Average plan of care = 8 visits.

Average visit consult fee $90 (I hope you are charging for than this - buts let's leave it at $90 for now)

Patient revenue per 8 visit episode = $720

If just 2 patients drop out early each week, you’re losing anywhere from $37,000–$75,000 a year — depending on when they quit.
