Delivering disability supports is a deeply sensitive and personal experience that needs to be approached consciously and with a deep understanding of the person being cared for. Australia’s diversity and multiculturalism is reflected in the NDIS where people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds make a very significant portion of all NDIS Participants in Australia, totalling to 24,023 participants in 2019. These numbers reinforce the notion that people with disabilities have unique identities, speaking different languages and each having their own cultures, values and beliefs that shape them and the care they need.
AES believes the richness and diversity among people with disabilities needs to be reflected on executive boards and governance roles to ensure equity, equality and fairness. We encourage members from CALD communities to take on being the NDIS provider and strive to upskill and train them to deliver a more personalised experience and culturally aware service to participants of similar backgrounds.
