Despite Fairfield’s rich history, physical evidence of Fairfield’s past is limited in the City Centre. The School of Arts on Harris Street is one of a handful of local heritage items in the city centre. It has social and historical significance as a major centre of social activity from the late nineteenth century to present. It is representative of Late Victorian and Federation period ‘high styles’, which is relatively rare in Fairfield City. It makes a valuable contribution to the streetscape and is a local area landmark.

Despite Fairfield’s rich history, physical evidence of Fairfield’s past is limited in the City Centre. The Former Fairfield Fire Station on William Street is one of a handful of local heritage items in the city centre, a rare example and representative of Inter-War Fire Stations. It makes an important contribution to the streetscape and is a local area landmark.

Did you know that Fairfield is recognised as the most multicultural City in Australia? And did you know that Fairfield City consistently welcomes more refugees than any other place in Australia?

This Fairfield International Monument was built in 1974 and was dedicated to the City by the Fairfield Multicultural Society, who worked at promoting the ideals of a multicultural society long before the term was cited in government policy.

The monument is a vital part of Fairfield City’s history and identity, promoting harmony, cohesion and community well being.

Chess players on Kenyon Street.

At the corner of Ware and Kenyon Street, the folks playing chess are a daily occurrence. This community gathering and interaction add to the vibrancy of Ware Street, which is considered the ‘Main Street’ of Fairfield City Centre.

In 2019, we were engaged by to undertake an Urban Design Study of Fairfield City Centre in response to an identified need to facilitate revitalisation.

The study has informed Fairfield Council’s LEP Review Stage 2, for which the documents are now on public exhibition: https://www.fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au/Planning-and-Building/Planning-and-Policies/Planning-Exhibitions/Planning-Proposal-LEP-Review-Stage-2

We look back on our work with this Local Character series on Fairfield City Centre and share with you some of the interesting and amusing urban elements we discovered.

The Crescent Cinema façade and palm tree key are landmarks of Fairfield City Centre. The Cinema façade remains in a precarious condition, however
development of the site is underway and seeks to retain and incorporate this landmark facade.
