Lake Burley Griffin is one of Canberra’s most significant cultural landscapes, central to the design and identity of Australia’s national capital.

In 2009, GML prepared the original Heritage Management Plan for Lake Burley Griffin and Adjacent Lands for the National Capital Authority (NCA), setting out a framework for protecting its heritage values while supporting its active use and ongoing interpretation. This award-winning plan has informed management decisions over many years.

With Lake Burley Griffin and Adjacent Lands added to the Commonwealth Heritage List in 2022, we are now undertaking a review of the Heritage Management Plan for the NCA to ensure the longevity and conservation of the place's heritage values.

How do you keep heritage places safe, accessible and relevant without compromising what makes them significant?

At the Wonthaggi State Coal Mine on Bunurong Country, GML worked with Parks Victoria to help balance heritage conservation with contemporary safety and operational requirements.

Following the temporary closure of the underground mine experience due to safety concerns, carefully considered works were needed to support the site's long-term future. Through a Heritage Impact Statement and permit application, our team helped identify an approach that minimises impacts on significant fabric while enabling visitors to continue engaging with this important part of Victoria’s industrial history.

The project highlights a challenge faced by many heritage tourism sites: adapting to changing standards while conserving the values that make these places meaningful.

A heritage win for the community! 🏡

Hillside, a rare and well-preserved Federation-era home in Rockdale, has been saved through community advocacy and the heritage process in action.

Constructed in 1908-1909, Hillside is a detached single-storey Federation dwelling with stylistic influences from the Federation Queen Anne style.

After demolition was proposed following the property’s sale in 2025 community concern led Bayside Council to place an Interim Heritage Order on the site while GML undertook a formal heritage assessment. That assessment confirmed the property met the threshold for heritage listing under the Bayside Local Environmental Plan 2021.

Strong advocacy from the local community, including the St George Historical Society and local residents, helped shape this outcome.

Bayside Council has now committed to purchasing and heritage listing the property, securing its long-term protection. Next steps include conservation works and exploring a suitable future use for this important local place.

Today is World Environment Day.

This year’s theme - Climate Action - is a reminder that climate change is already reshaping the places and landscapes we value.

At GML, we help communities, government and industry respond by building resilience and sustainability into heritage places, supporting renewable energy projects through specialist archaeological and cultural heritage services, and conserving parks, gardens and cultural landscapes so their stories can continue into the future.

Reducing emissions is critical, but so too is ensuring the places, stories and landscapes we value can endure for future generations.

Last month, former residents of the Ballarat Orphanage and Ballarat Children’s Home returned to 200 Victoria Street, Ballarat East, alongside families, friends and community members, to mark the opening of new heritage interpretation at the site.

The gathering recognised the personal and shared histories of those whose lives were shaped by the institution, which operated there for 117 years.

GML was commissioned by Ballarat City Council, in collaboration with Ash Tree Projects, to develop interpretation concepts for the site. The project was shaped through engagement with former residents, whose lived experience helped guide a sensitive and thoughtful response to place.

Guided by GML’s Interpretation Plan, the new interpretation includes an entrance arch, sculptural marbles, text and image panels, outdoor seating and shelter, and landscaping improvements. Together, these elements create a space for both play and quiet reflection.

National Reconciliation Week commences today, inviting us to reflect, listen and consider how we can contribute to reconciliation in Australia. This year’s theme, All In, reminds us that meaningful change takes commitment, care and action from all of us.

At GML, our Reconciliation Action Plan and cultural heritage work reflect our ongoing commitment to learning from, supporting and building respectful partnerships with First Nations communities.

We support and encourage everyone at GML, and across our wider networks, to deepen their awareness of First Nations peoples’ experiences and be part of the journey toward greater understanding, healing and change.
