Leaders are often faced with difficult decisions that can have lasting implications. In order to prevent unwanted consequences, it is important for leaders to learn how to control their impulses.
One way to do this is to take a step back and assess the situation.
What are the potential risks and rewards of each decision?
What are the long-term consequences of each decision?
By taking the time to weigh all the options, leaders can make more informed decisions that are in the best interests of their constituents.
Another way to exercise self-control is to solicit input from others. When we make decisions in a vacuum, we are more likely to fall victim to our own biases. But when we involve others in the decision-making process, we can get different perspectives that can help us see the situation in a new light.
Of course, even with the best intentions, there will be times when leaders make decisions that they later regret. But if they can learn to control their impulses and make decisions with thought and consideration, they can avoid many unwanted consequences.
