I had an excellent question asked of me today. How does one handle a situation whereby someone seems emotionally dysregulated, angry, rude, or abusive?
How does one know if this person is neurodivergent and experiencing momentary dysregulation vs someone just being an a*hole?

Firstly I doubt anyone wants to or enjoys being an a*hole. Often people are projecting internal angst or frustration.

So with this here is a quick guide in how to navigate a situation like this:

Approaching someone who appears rude or offensive requires a combination of empathy, patience, and effective communication skills. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to handle such situations:

1. Stay Calm: Before approaching the individual, take a deep breath and ensure you're calm. Reacting emotionally can escalate the situation.

2. Choose the Right Setting: If possible, approach the person privately. Public confrontations can be embarrassing and may cause the person to become defensive.

3. Use "I" Statements: Instead of saying "You are being rude," say something like "I felt hurt when you said that." This focuses on your feelings rather than accusing them.

4. Ask Open-Ended Questions: Instead of making accusations, ask questions to understand their perspective. For example, "Can you help me understand why you said that?" or "Did something happen that made you feel this way?"

5. Listen Actively: Give them your full attention. Avoid interrupting, and show that you're genuinely trying to understand their viewpoint.

6. Empathise: If they share their feelings or reasons, acknowledge them. Say something like, "I can see why you might feel that way."

7. Avoid Blame: Focus on the behavior and not the person. For example, "When you raise your voice, it makes it hard for me to listen," rather than "You're always shouting."

8. Offer Support: If they seem to be struggling with personal issues, offer support or suggest they speak to someone who can help, like a counselor or therapist.

9. Set Boundaries: If the behavior continues, set clear boundaries. For instance, "I want to have this conversation, but I'd appreciate it if we could speak respectfully to each other."
