Upcoming FBT Changes from 1 April 2027

14/09/2026

📢 Upcoming FBT Changes from 1 April 2027

The ATO has announced changes to Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) that may affect employers providing salary sacrificed work-related benefits.

Here are the key changes:

🔹 Some work-related expenses
The ‘otherwise deductible’ rule will no longer reduce FBT for certain salary sacrificed expenses, including home office, home phone/internet and self-education expenses.

🔹 Some work-related items
Certain items, such as laptops, software, protective clothing, briefcases and tools of trade, will no longer be FBT-exempt when provided through a salary sacrifice arrangement.

🔹Multiple work-related items
Employers will be able to provide more than one eligible work-related item in an FBT year, provided the items are mainly used for work and are not provided through salary sacrifice.

📅 These changes apply from 1 April 2027.

Employers providing salary sacrificed work-related benefits should be aware of these changes and consider whether they may affect their FBT obligations.

ATO Reminder : Overdue Prior-Year Tax Returns

10/09/2026

📌 ATO Reminder: Overdue Prior-Year Tax Returns

Taxpayers operating on a standard financial year who have one or more prior-year tax returns overdue as at 30 June 2026 may have a different lodgment due date for their 2026 tax return.

For the 2025–26 financial year:

• Overdue prior-year tax returns must be lodged by 31 October 2026.
• If all overdue returns are lodged by 31 October, the 2026 tax return will be due according to the normal lodgment program.
• It may take up to 3 weeks for the updated due date to appear on the client list.
• There is no need to apply for a deferral for the 2026 tax return, provided the prior-year returns are lodged by 31 October.
• Overdue prior-year returns may be subject to penalties and interest.

For taxpayers who were not required to lodge a particular year's return, notifying the ATO that a return is not required can help ensure the correct lodgment due date is set.

📅 31 October 2026 is an important date to be aware of when considering overdue prior-year returns.
