Over the past four years, our team has been privileged to facilitate a co-design process with the evolving the National War Memorial Public Domain in alignment with the goals and design principles of the heritage plan.

The process involved reviewing AWM’s masterplan, integrating the site’s key components — the Southern Entrance, the Bean Building, and Anzac Hall — along with improvements to East and West Streets.

Sub Base Platypus Torpedo Factory is the recipient of the 2024 Landscape Architecture Award for Cultural Heritage for the extensive reworking of the 1942 Torpedo Factory building to create a new multifunctional public space on the former HMAS Platypus site in North Sydney.

The project promotes multiple narratives that reflect the complex nature of the site — formally a torpedo factory, submarine base and gas works — and importantly the millennia–long connection of the Cammeraygal people and culture on the harbour and its peninsulas.

Cultural engagement and reconciliation through design has been delivered in contemporary and innovative ways that have created a layered response to the intrinsic heritage and cultural values of the site.

AILA Jury Citation —
Combining restoration of endemic vegetation, contemporary art, and imaginative heritage interpretation, the team has drawn on the qualities of the place. The team’s collaborative approach has transformed a derelict industrial building into a compelling public space that fosters local interest and care for the place while recreating space where landscape areas can be revitalised in the future park.

Guiding the transformation of a complex site with incredible potential, the design team’s collaboration with First Nations designers has resulted in contemporary expressions of culture in combination with a playful interpretation of the industrial heritage.

30/05/2024

At Turf, we recognise the power of reconciliation to strengthen relationships between Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non–Indigenous peoples. First Nations stories and knowledge sharing is woven into design practices to deeply embed Country within the public domain.

This year’s theme for Reconciliation Week is ‘Now More Than Ever’, a reminder to all of us that the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must continue. Now more than ever, we need to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation.

We believe that education, knowledge sharing and storytelling is key in fostering reconciliation. Here we highlight a few of our recently built projects where Indigenous voices, culture and identity have been integrated into the design process and constructed public spaces.

COX Architecture with 3XN Architects, Aileen Sage, Turf Design Studio and Bangawarra has won the international design competition for Riverside Theatres in Parramatta, Sydney.

The team acknowledge the enduring spirit and Peoples of Burramatta Country.

With a foundation built on established relationships, confidence, and mutual understanding, the design team is driven by a shared vision. This vision will establish the Riverside Theatres as the cornerstone of burgeoning cultural presence within the Central River City.

Our winning design includes a new 1,500 seat lyric theatre alongside a smaller 424 seat studio theatre and 80 seat cinema. Additionally, the existing playhouse theatre will undergo significant refurbishment into a 760 seat venue. The revitalised riverfront will be a focal point, boasting a vibrant riverside bar and café, improved pedestrian pathways, and extensive new endemic landscaping. Committed to sustainability, the design targets a 5 Star Green Star rating, with a focus on reusing existing building materials to minimise environmental impact. The design seeks to remediate and restore the Parramatta landscape and riverbank ecologies to foster thriving biodiverse natural ecosystems.

The design team thanks the City of Parramatta, Riverside Theatres, and the competition design jury for this opportunity to contribute to the cultural and public life of Parramatta and Greater Western Sydney.

Thanks also to our collaborative partners and creative team lead by Joe Agius at with , and

Especially today, on ANZAC Day we are proud to be a part of the Australian War Memorial redevelopment. A place of quiet contemplation, honouring the legacy of the Australian Defence Force and Peacekeeping Services. Lest we forget.
