Even the ABC NEWS recognises the absolute disaster made of the Export Market Development Grants program by successive Austrade management teams and Governments (of both political colours).

It appears that neither Austrade or any political party has anyone that understands small business or even how exporting by small business works.

Highlights from the in depth report by the ABC exposes how Australian exporters are feeling stressed and angry over the Export Market Development Grant (EMDG) program.
🔹 $62 million in funding was exhausted in just 84 hours under the new “first in, best dressed” system.
🔹 Some applicants are still waiting almost a year for outcomes, leaving businesses in limbo.
🔹 Industry experts warn the system disadvantages smaller and regional businesses, creating a chaotic “digital scramble” instead of fair access.

The program is limited to the smallest amount of funding since the year 2000, it is now half of the figure then and less than one third if allowing for inflation (CPI increases).

For decades, EMDG has been vital in helping SMEs promote products overseas, attend trade expos, and access new markets. But the latest changes have created uncertainty at a time when exporters are also dealing with global trade challenges.

It has shown to be a six times multiplier in exports for every dollar spent.

We, 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐉𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐡, had the pleasure of attending the 𝐑&𝐃 𝐓𝐚𝐱 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧’𝐬 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 at the Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort on 𝟑–𝟒 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓.

It was fantastic to connect with leading experts from the Australian Taxation Office, the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, and top R&D tax and legal professionals from across the country.

We also enjoyed insightful sessions, including one by 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐲 𝐌𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐲 (RDTAA member) on Record Keeping and why the ATO relies on it. We caught up with members of the RDTAA Executive, including 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐥 𝐑𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐢 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐇𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐬 — great conversations all around!

The conference delivered in-depth insights on the latest developments in R&D tax incentives, compliance strategies, and opportunities for innovation. It was an invaluable experience to stay ahead of the curve and ensure we continue to provide the best support for our clients in navigating the R&D tax space.

A big thank you to the RDTAA for hosting such a comprehensive and engaging event. We’re looking forward to applying these insights to help businesses unlock their R&D potential.

Yesterday, 27 May 2025, we had the privilege of serving as judges at the 𝐌𝐈𝐓 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 at the 𝐌𝐈𝐓 𝐒𝐲𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬.

It was a brilliant opportunity to connect with up-and-coming talent and witness the innovative thinking being developed through MIT’s programs. We’re always inspired by the creativity and problem-solving on display.
