Recycling plays a role — but is it enough to solve Australia’s plastic problem?

According to the National Waste and Resource Recovery Report 2024:

“The recovery rate for plastics was the lowest of all other waste categories at only 12%.”

Even as recycling systems improve, the volume of plastic waste keeps rising.

“The quantity of plastic waste generated per year increased by about 12%, while the population grew by only 8%.”

To truly make an impact, we need to think beyond recycling and tackle the issue at its source:

✅ Avoid
✅ Reduce
✅ Reuse
✅ Then recycle

Welcome to our new series "Good News, Everyone!"

This April, Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, reported on the measurements of 6 major metropolitan regions in Australia for plastic pollution. Results were promising, showing a 39% decrease in plastic pollution along coastlines.

“Researchers surveyed inland, riverine, and coastal habitats across six metropolitan regions across Australia including Hobart in Tasmania, Newcastle in New South Wales, Perth in Western Australia, Port Augusta in South Australia, Sunshine Coast in Queensland, and Alice Springs in the Northern Territory."

“A total of 8383 debris items were recorded across 1907 surveys within a 100-kilometre radius of each city. Polystyrene (24 per cent) and cigarette butts (20 per cent) were the most found items, followed by food wrappers, bottle lids and caps. Plastic fragments were also commonly recorded."

The results were compared to that of data surveyed in "Drivers of environmental debris in metropolitan areas: a continental scale assessment", which was conducted a decade ago and builds on previous work that showed a 29 per cent reduction in plastic waste across all of Australia.

Introducing our new series: 'The Wrap On Plastics'
Your monthly dose of hard truths and bold facts about the real impact of plastic.

Part 1: Plastic Overshoot Day

Did you know?

Each year, on a calculated date during the year, we reach what’s called our ‘Plastic Overshoot Day’.

“This marks the point when the amount of plastic waste generated from single use packaging, household and textile sectors exceeds the world’s capacity to manage it, resulting in environmental pollution.”

During 2024 the global day fell on September 5th, and this date is unfortunately still on the rise.

In Australia, our date was December 7.

Regardless of country, the stats are alarming:

"By April 2024, almost half (47%) of the world’s population will be living in areas where plastic waste has already exceeded the capacity to manage it, indicating a pressing need for action to address the plastic waste crisis."

But remember:

It’s not all doom and gloom
Your actions make a difference
Choose reusable
Then choose compostable

Through this series, we hope to raise awareness and understanding that will lea to positive change.

The importance of hope in the face of adversity.

In dealing with sustainability, we're often exposed to extremes of narrative that influence our ability to act.

While fear is a powerful tool, too much of it can lead to doom and gloom, which may make us feel powerless to improve the world around us.

You could be like Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia, who calls himself a total pessimist about the fate of the natural world'. Although he shares this sentiment, he's careful to point out that it doesn't necessarily matter whether you're optimistic or not. It's our action that is most important.

On the other hand, Rebecca Solnit has been writing about hope for the last 19 years. She points out in reference to her project 'It's Not Too Late' that the journey from grief to action carries obstacles of authority and a belief that the we lack the power to make change. Reminding ourselves of this plausibility of the possible is crucial in motivating the will to act.

'It is always probable that Goliath will win, but it is also true that sometimes David wins'.

What are your thoughts on hope and the nature of change? What importance do you give it and how might it influence our ability to act?

Why choosing the right manufacturer makes a difference.

An important aspect of practising sustainability is measuring impact.

For one, it gives us an indication of where we're going, making the path a bit more clear. When we have a better sense of our direction, we walk with that little bit more inspiration and confidence.

Positive wins are also essential. Who doesn't like a win? A sense of accomplishment goes a long way and can fuel our motivation to press on.

Choosing manufacturers like BioPak mean that we're doing far more than just purchasing product. We're contributing to positive change. What's more, they're able to share with us measurable impact from our business involvement.

So from us to you and everyone who made this possible - thank you for helping us avoid 4.84 tonnes of plastic, plant 3 trees, donate 34 meals and impact 30 lives.

What do you think? Is measuring impact important? How does your business measure impact?

Introducing Eco Alternative 2.0!

We've taken some time off social media recently to focus our efforts on a lot of exciting developments.

But one of the most crucial things we've been spending time on is research.

Being a part of such a dynamic industry means that we need to adapt to change in order to stick to our goals. With shifts in regulation and legislation over the past few years, we've been prompted to revisit our original solutions to enhance them for the future.

We continue to ask ourselves - what approach achieves the greatest impact on our environment AND our economy? What is the most sustainable way forward, both ecologically and economically when it comes to packaging?

We feel we've taken a big step recently towards answering that. For now though, we're thrilled to share our new look. A new logo for a new phase, which symbolises the start of a whole lot more to be announced in the coming weeks and months.

So tell us! How do you like the new branding? We'd love to hear your feedback and reconnect with all of you.

Hoping you've all been happy and healthy.
