An ICAC investigation into racism within the Northern Territory Police Force has handed down it’s findings, finding no evidence of racism beyond 2015.

The investigation uncovered racist mock ‘awards’, some of which it deemed too “offensive” to make public, but concluded there was no use in further investigating the matter.

The latest ICAC investigation report into the TRG officers who swore false statements to the court provides us with perhaps the best example yet of how those in positions of power in the Territory set up a supposedly independent investigation to appear independent, while secretly ensuring its predetermined outcomes fall in their favour.

A lawyer representing three Aboriginal police officers in a human rights complaint against the Northern Territory Police Force has slammed an investigation into racism within the force as “flawed” and “an attempt to wipe the slate clean”.

Leading Indigenous justice advocates say the assault of a child in Unit 18 by a much larger and older prison guard captured on CCTV footage drives home the urgent need for immediate and long-term change to WA’s justice system.

The video, shot during a riot in the notorious Unit 18 facility – a stand-alone youth wing in a Perth maximum security adult prison – shows 52 year-old Daniel Travis Ratten kneeing a handcuffed 16 year-old boy in the torso.

It’s a confronting moment captured on camera — a handcuffed 16-year-old boy is kneed in the torso by a veteran prison guard much bigger and older than him.

That single moment resulted in the guard, Daniel Travis Ratten, 52, being fined $5,000 and given a spent conviction.
