Calor licitantis is a Latin term now used to describe ‘bidder’s heat’ or ‘auction fever’: the irrational momentum that can drive bidders to pay more than an item’s expected value. The concept dates to Roman law, where excessive bidding could affect the enforceability of an auction purchase. Unlike ancient Rome, however, there's no easy out. Do make sure you read the T's&C's when signing up to bid.
