"In Australia, su***de is the leading cause of death for people aged 15-44." This infographic says it all. In the last 2 years during the pandemic, we can only imagine how the statistics have worsened.

This year, Humans Who Lead is participating in Sydney's Coastrek, in support of Beyond Blue. Beyond Blue does amazing things for our communities, offering real-time support, resources, and education. Most importantly, they role model compassion. Because only through community and connection can this mental health crisis be addressed. And Beyond Blue is there every day doing this work.

Please consider donating and supporting this worthy cause. These days, there is no single person that is not impacted by mental unwellness. "There are tragic ripple effects for every su***de for friends, families, colleagues, and the broader community." I hope you'll join me in helping to make change.

UPCOMING EVENT:

A CALL TO CONNECTION AND ACTION

The year of the pandemic surfaced a world of fear and despair as it exposed deep racial inequities and injustices, along with highly charged political and social divides inherent in our institutions, communities, and mindsets.

Racism and/or Sexism were front and center in many of the past year’s defining events: George Floyd’s murder, the insurrection at the Capitol, the Atlanta mass shootings.

And, while there is a collective cry for justice and accountability, for an end to systemic racism -- in the criminal justice system, the healthcare system, the financial system -- many of us are left feeling helpless, wondering how we can help create meaningful change?

Join us for a 6 series virtual zoom workshop where we explore topics such as racism, sexism, white privilege, internalised oppression, and marginalisation with bravery, compassion, and dignity for all.

A few days after , we are still reflecting and seeing all the amazing posts from all humans about how we societal expectations and man-made barriers around how women should be treated, act, and "behave". So here's a blog for all the dreamers in the world - for a place that is more equitable and loving for all human beings

Today honours Martin Luther King, Jr. Today, more than ever, let us recognise his contributions to humanity and how there are many like him who continue the work of social justice today. When I was young, I did not recognise the profoundness of his words. I am reminded today that love always prevails over hate.

Our first session created a space for people to talk openly about systemic racism, white privilege, and marginalisation. The stories shared are a critical first step to understanding where we all come from, making sense of our roles as potential anti-racists, and creating space for empathy to stand with our BIPOC community.

If you missed the conversation, we will be hosting another one on 5 Aug from 6:30-8:30pm EST (6 Aug from 8:30am-10:30am AEST Sydney time).

Registration is open and there a few spots left. This is a donation based event and proceeds will go to ESTACI, a Virginia based nonprofit that supports African American community building and education.

Hope to see you there!

How "safe" is your workplace culture? Do people feel empowered to speak up, share their ideas, and bring their whole selves to the workplace? Research shows that it takes more energy to try to be something you're not rather than just be who you are. I the modern work era, we need to redefine workplace safety and make it a key part of our culture.

Two great anecdotes about leaders who make the time for small gestures, with big impact. "Small gestures—whether signage or speech, body language or handwritten messages—can send big signals about who we are, what we care about, and why we do what we do."

What small gestures do you enact as a leader to let your people know that you care about them?

They send big signals about who we are and what we care about.

Many people have been sharing their experience of "virtual collboration overload". It's a real thing! This quote in the article captured it well: “It’s easier being in each other’s presence, or in each other’s absence, than in the constant presence of each other’s absence.”

Read on for some ways to stay balanced and connected. The one I strive for, having been on zoom calls for the past 2 years, is to resist the temptation of multi-tasking and really tune into the person front and centre, the one who is speaking and sharing. Let us not be in the "constant presence of each other's absence" by being intentional with our attention!

Steven Hickman, Psy.D., executive director of the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion, offers this timely perspective on managing our new virtual reality.
