According to Maslow's theory, individuals must satisfy their lower-level needs before moving up to the next level. Once the lower-level needs are satisfied, individuals can move up to higher-level needs. The ultimate goal is to achieve self-actualization, where individuals can realise their full potential and achieve personal fulfilment.
➡️ By applying this theory within HR we can build on each level, working from base level compliance (Physiological needs) through to Self actualisation.
👉 Here's some ideas on how your HR function can apply the theory when building out your base level.
Starting at the lower level needs creates a solid baseline and can help build psychological safety early on within the team.
✅ Physiological: Pay and working conditions (compliance)
✅ Safety: Job security - Clear expectations (transparent job levelling and performance frameworks)
✅ Love and Belonging: Encouraging community, promoting group work, and utilising positive communication and meaningful moments to help people build meaningful relationships.
✅ Self-esteem: building a culture of continuous feedback, appraisal, and recognition
✅ Self-actualization: Personal development plans, training, mentoring, and opportunities for promotion to help employees reach their full potential
