Is stress good or bad?

Stress is part of life. Stress is inevitable and in fact without any stress at all life would be impossible.

BUT …

We hear so much about stress being the leading cause of so many problems, from chronic health challenges, to mental health issues, from relationship breakdown to things like putting on weight.

SO …

… is stress good, or bad?

It depends on 3 things:

The stress load you are carrying and accumulating

Your personal stress tolerance

Your strategy to empty your load and increase your strategy

If your stress is low and your tolerance high, you are in the adaptable zone and won’t be knocked about by the stresses of life that you face.

If however you are trying to carry more stress than you have capacity for you will notice things in life start to dysfunction. You may lose health, connections, emotions, sleep etc.

These levels of stress are toxic or even traumatic and may require a fresh look at your strategies.

With so much content being thrown at us every day it can be hard to find any time to think. The constant barrage of social media and emails is telling us what we *should* be thinking. This, when coupled with our cultural addiction to scrolling is it any wonder that so many capable and intelligent people feel overwhelmed, lost and unsure of what lies ahead.

Here’s my thoughts of what you could do to find margin:

Overinflated self-importance disconnects people.

Connection is crucial for both our mental and physical health. Pride, ego and an over-inflated view of our ‘importance’ creates barriers to connection.

Taking a more humble and curious approach to others, where we seek first to understand (as Stephen Covey would say) breaks down the ‘protective’ barriers that many people live with.

Try asking more questions of others, and invite them to share their own story. This helps people feel safer.

NB: This doesn’t have to mean prying, but one thing most people love is to share their own life experiences (not just listen to yours) 😉

Are You Exhausted and Leaking Energy?

If so ... this is for you 👇👇

Last week I was tired. Each day felt hard to get through and by the end of the week, I was spent.

At first glance, I couldn’t understand why. It seemed to be a normal week. There was no extra load, I wasn’t being asked to do more or be more places, and yet … EXHAUSTED. My head was foggy, my body tired and emotionally I was a little, ummm, short.

We long for growth - to become better versions of ourselves - but for many there is a disconnect between the desire for growth, and the realisation of it.

Some say … “I feel stuck” …

… for others it is “same s**t, different day”.

I even hear some say “I feel like I’ve been around this mountain before, and here I am again”.

So why does this happen? Why the disconnect?

I feel it is because much of the time, we lack the courage to face up to the things we know we need to change.

We want growth without the change.

We feel that if we push on, dragging the heavy “things” of life behind us, then someday they will get lighter, or better still, fall away all together.

One of the strategies that we (all) use to avoid facing up and addressing the heavy things is self medication.

In Week 1 of The REVIVE Challenge (starting October) we discuss how to address some of the burdens and overwhelm that hold us back from change and growth.
