As the world traverses through some challenging economic times, 2023 stands as a testament to resilience and adaptability.

The PMO is having to evolve to meet the challenges of what has been referred to as a year of “wait and see”, echoing the uncertainty of a global community at a crossroads.

If 2023 was a year to step back, reflect, consolidate, and prepare for continuous change, what do the next twelve months hold for project delivery?

With the change and pressures facing the workforce, resilience has been a frequent topic amongst the leadership. Being resilient is an individual characteristic, a personality trait used to describe someone who never gives up. But how much of an individual’s ability to be resilient can be attributed to the teams in which they belong?

What are the critical drivers that enable a team to foster collective innovation, problem-solving, and the ability to be agile, not to mention to develop the camaraderie needed to remain during periods of ?

There is often a divide between where impact is felt when organisations start to transform. For staff at the frontline, it’s crucial to get the communication right from the get-go and the messages might not be what you think.
As is the nature of transformational change initiatives, they often come top-down from head office and roll out across the organisation. They are the mechanism of strategy, driving to a new bold future that leadership has targeted.

This is not to say that ideas cannot be generated from across the organisation; they can. However, they must still be ratified and funded, aligned to strategy, and endorsed for ex*****on.

It’s not right or wrong; it’s just how things work.

Sometime in the near future, the CEO of a large telecom provider is using a smartphone app to check on her organization’s seven strategic initiatives. Within a few taps, she knows the status of every project and what percentage of expected benefits each one has delivered. Project charters and key performance indicators are available in moments, as are each team member’s morale level and the overall buy-in of critical stakeholders.

In this edition of our Corporate Competitor Podcast, Maxwell Leadership Thought Leader Don Yaeger sits down with Stephen Howe, Chief Financial Officer of The Wonderful Company, to discuss the leader’s role in fostering a culture of positivity rather than fear.

“As a senior executive, I’m often guided by this legend: long ago, an ancestor was out gathering shoots and berries on the savanna and heard the distant roar of a lion,” Stephen Howe shared. “As the roar grew ever closer, he sped up his work and, when the lion appeared nearby, made for the cave as fast as his bare feet would carry him.”

Culture wields enormous power. It is the deciding factor that not only can create an incredibly dynamic, innovative workplace but also drive extraordinary levels of ex*****on in the marketplace.

Culture is the way forward if we are to embrace this expanded set of possibilities and build an outstanding organization that serves a purpose greater than just profit. It is one thing to create a momentary buzz about your culture, which can have a short-term effect; it is quite another to create a culture that embodies the core DNA of your organization and has a lasting impact.

Companies across a range of industries as well as professional-services firms have been betting on sponsorship initiatives to improve the career advancement of their diverse hires. Unlike mentors who offer moral support or coaching, sponsors spend their own political capital to advance more junior sponsees, through advocacy and other tactical moves.

Typical company programs pair senior leaders with sponsees in a kind of “arranged marriage” with little more than a one-pager or, in the best of cases, an hour of training. As these programs grow in popularity, aspiring sponsors need more practical guidance about what to do beyond the first meeting.

Ask leaders how they will respond to a crisis or a massive new opportunity, and they often will tell you they already know what to do. This is surprising because most crises and opportunities have unexpected elements. A high-powered executive whom we coach once told us, “In any crisis, I come out of the gate fast and take action. I go over, under, or through any wall in my way. With my people, I lead from the front.” To be sure, that approach has the benefit of decisiveness, but it offers a narrow path, especially in high-stakes situations. What happens when such leaders run into obstacles they can’t muscle their way through?

The idea that digital technologies are fundamentally changing knowledge work is not new. We’ve been talking about the paperless office for decades. But what is less well understood is just how far technology can push decision-making to the edges of the organization, allowing businesses to adopt structures that are flatter and more reconfigurable than those they’ve traditionally used.

Mistakes and critical incidents inevitably happen: Websites crash, products break, customers get angry. How leaders react and respond can inform an organization’s culture — for better or worse. Blame leads to finger-pointing, resentment, distrust, and unproductive behavior. It can cause an organisation to stagnate, with people feeling that their efforts are not valued. In contrast, responding without blame creates an environment of learning and growth in which employees recognize that mistakes are part of the process and that their efforts are appreciated — a blameless culture.

Within a blameless culture, leaders blame processes, not people. They focus on understanding why something happened, not who is responsible. By striving to identify the root cause of an issue, they create systems that prevent it from happening again.

CFOs facing economic headwinds as 2023 begins are keeping their focus on costs, looking to reduce discretionary spending as a potential recession continues to loom.

This does not mean initiatives like digital transformation have fallen by the wayside, however: CFOs continue to view digital transformation as strategically important for their businesses.

A recent study by Gartner found planning and sequencing finance transformation as well as setting a finance technology strategy roadmap were both among the top ten priorities for CFOs moving into 2023.

25/01/2023

In times of disruption and great uncertainty, most organisations tend to protect what they have and wait for a return to “normal.” That’s a high-risk strategy today because we may be on the cusp of a new era. Structural supply-chain issues, rising interest rates, and sustainability challenges are just a few conditions that have become the new norm and hold critical implications for business models. Amid this much change, merely trying to manage costs and raise productivity is unlikely to overcome the growth challenge that seven out of eight organizations face today. Instead, companies need to find emerging pockets of growth that can help them secure long-term success.
