What Coachella can teach us about leadership…
There’s been a lot of conversation comparing Sabrina Carpenter and Justin Bieber and how differently they showed up on stage.
But instead of asking who did it better, I see something more valuable:
This is a reminder that we all show up differently.
In every team, you’ll see this dynamic play out.
You have the ones who bring the energy, big ideas to the table, the “bells and whistles”:
✨ openly sharing in meetings
✨ showcasing their work
✨ bringing in networks and connections
✨ confidently “name dropping” to open doors and create opportunities.
And then you have those who may sit quietly, observing and take it all in…
✨ when invited in, they captivate the room
✨ thoughtful insights and deep thinking
✨ powerful storytelling
✨ makes space for everyone to reflect.
Both are valuable.
Both are needed.
𝑵𝒆𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒔 “𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕” 𝒐𝒓 “𝒘𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒈.”
The challenge for leaders isn’t to shape people into one way of performing. It’s to understand what each person needs to perform at their best.
So instead of comparison, what if we paused and asked:
✨ Who in my team thrives by thinking out loud?
✨ Who builds influence through relationships and networks?
✨ Who needs space before they contribute?
Because great leadership isn’t about how you would perform.
It’s about how your team performs best.
When we recognise and respect behavioural differences, we don’t just build better teams, we create more inclusive, high-performing environments where everyone has space to shine.
Question: Are you leading people to perform like you… or creating space for them to perform like themselves?
