Energy Market Update | October 8, 2026: NSW Q4 firms as availability tightens

NSW Q4-26 rose more than $13/MWh over the week as generator availability fell through October and November. Queensland also shows lower October availability, while Victoria remains broadly unchanged and higher 2027 availability is easing Cal-28 pressure.

With the move concentrated in near-term availability risk, contract timing and market position remain important.

Running lean while running races.

Racing clubs face the same market risks as any business. Newcastle Harness Racing Club didn’t renew blindly. They asked Energy Action to run a market-based auction. Seven retailers competed. One stood out.

The Club signed a 3-year deal with a saving of 10% against benchmark pricing. That’s real money back to support events and community causes.

Energy Action | Gas Market Update September 2026

East coast spot gas remains around $9–10/GJ, with Victoria in the high $9s and other markets around the low $10s.
Those prices are keeping gas-fired generation costs contained and reducing pressure on evening electricity prices. Gas is not currently driving the summer premium appearing in electricity contracts.

Gas pricing remains contained heading into warmer conditions: https://hubs.la/Q04xXczV0

Energy Action | Renewable Energy Market Update September 2026

LGCs have moved back to around $8 after falling to about $7.
The market remains well supplied and voluntary buying is still limited. The next issue is demand, with data centre development among the potential sources of additional certificate buying.

Certificate pricing remains driven by how quickly demand absorbs available supply: https://hubs.la/Q04xXcxL0

Energy Action | Electricity Market Update September 2026

NSW and Queensland daytime spot prices are sitting above $50/MWh as warmer weather starts to lift demand.
2027 Q1 and Q2 forward prices are also moving higher as summer risk is priced back into contracts. Batteries, cheaper gas and stronger interconnectors are still helping limit evening price volatility.

Summer risk is starting to return to forward pricing: https://hubs.la/Q04xXcvv0
