Thrilled to receive a very special gift today from my dear friend and fellow Pest Manager Chaiamon Chantarapitak in Thailand. Really nice of him to send it from Thailand to Malaysia, to my daughter Natasha’s place, so I receive it on arrival. He has sent me an awesome book on Ants of Thailand. Over 500 pages of beautiful and stunning photos of amazing ants found in Thailand. I am really thrilled and going through every page with a hot cup of Ceylon Tea besides me, before I go to bed tonight. Thank you very much Chaiamon and cheers to you all.

Did you know the best parents in the world are the termite king and queen? We often hear of the good old workers in the colony feeding the royals and tending to the colony. But did you know the queen and king work the hardest as parents during the early life of the colony, to ensure that their first offspring makes it, and so that they can then retire from parental duties?.

Thomas Chouvenc, an assistant professor of entomology at the UF/IFAS Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center said “Scientists often think of termites as these complex societies, where the workers are taking care of everyone, including the queen and king,” said Chouvenc. “This is true in developed colonies, but during colony establishment, the new queen and king are the most remarkable parents.”

Studying the parental behaviors of termites has provided a University of Florida scientist with a rare look into how a queen and king pair push the limits of parenthood.

Can rats transmit Covid 19 virus?
The UK government report outlines that the risk of Covid-19 remaining in such levels as to be infectious in waste is very low (>1%).

However, if a Covid-19 strain could survive long enough in waste, then the likelihood of a human-to-rodent crossover is high (66-90%), given the considerable interaction between rodents and potentially contaminated human waste.

Can houseflies mechanically transmit the covid 19 virus?
Under laboratory conditions, house flies acquired and harbored infectious SARS-CoV-2 for up to 24 h post-exposure. In addition, house flies were able to mechanically transmit SARS-CoV-2 genomic RNA to the surrounding environment up to 24 h post-exposure. Further studies are warranted to determine if house fly transmission occurs naturally and the potential public health implications of such events.

P*e could be tomorrows pest control? Various beetle species have gobbled through grain stores and weakened food production worldwide since ancient times. Now there is a way to make stored product pests such as Beetles p*e themselves to death rather than use pesticides. This is what researchers from the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Biology are working on. As part of a broader effort to develop more “ecological” methods of combatting harmful insects in the near future, researchers have discovered which hormones regulate urine formation in the kidneys of beetles to cause them to p*e to death.

Could this be your missing key for successful pest management at food processing plants? "Plant floor workers can play an integral role in pest management at food processing plants,” says Desiree Straubinger, BCE, CP-FS market technical director for Rentokil. “Since they are there every day, they will be able to notice things that are out of the ordinary.” Frank Meek, BCE Meek of Orkin says "Broadly speaking, when it comes to pest control, workers can and should be trained to report two things: the presence of pests inside a plant and the existence of conditions that could lead to infestation" See linked article for more valuable insights from other experts. - Alex Blahnik, Patricia Hottel, Jerry Heath and Myron Baumann

A properly trained workforce can help make pest control programs as effective as possible.
