He had spent more than a month – searching, interviewing, speaking with referees, assessing and planning. After a last tweak of the job specification she prepared a contract for employment. At their final meeting – just before sliding the contract across the table for signature – he drew breadth and looked deep into the candidate’s eyes, knowing that from that moment on, they would probably never look so good again.

Once someone (especially a more senior executive) starts in a new role a lot of questions become off-limits and it is virtually impossible to revisit one overlooked at interview. Even when asked, the answer would, at least, be subtlety different through circumstances. The fact is that people rarely perform to expectations once hired, for a host of reasons: the culture is different to that portrayed (or imagined) when the chair is empty; it is difficult to get a deep appreciation of a life-time experience in a few hours of meetings; but most often because the candidate is stepping up to a level where they are untested, and moving to an untried environment!

For these reasons it pays handsomely to be very sure before appointing someone – for their sake as well as your own. It can be expensive, and damaging in so many ways. If you have any doubts, any at all, in those last moments, slide the contract back in to your top draw!
