Happy International Women’s Day! 🌸

Today, i would like to shout out want and take a moment to celebrate the incredible women in our communities who work tirelessly, both in paid roles and through volunteering, to make a difference every day.

Its important to recognise the quiet achievers – the women who run farms, businesses, and households, volunteer in our community groups all while nurturing families and strengthening our community. Your strength and perseverance are the backbone of everything we hold dear here, and we see you. Thank you for everything you do to keep our local spirit alive and growing. 🌱💐

This year’s theme is about accelerating action, which is a call for us to move from words to meaningful change, especially when it comes to women’s empowerment. For us here, it means amplifying the voices of local women, breaking barriers, and providing even more opportunities for women to lead, thrive, and be heard. Whether it's supporting women in leadership, entrepreneurship, or grassroots efforts, we are committed to advancing progress in every way we can.

To all the women who make our community stronger and brighter – thank you. Let's continue to support, uplift, and celebrate each other today and every day. 💜✨

What a great tool, especially in this heatwave we have been having…

🌞 Heat hangover 🌞

We all know that too many drinks can lead to a miserable hangover with symptoms like headache, nausea, irritability, and fatigue. But did you know that prolonged exposure to heat can make you feel just as awful?

Thermal physiologist Dr. Matt Brearley introduced the term "heat hangover" to describe the similar uncomfortable symptoms that occur when we overexert ourselves in the heat—without even touching a drop of alcohol.

Heat hangovers can compromise the safety of staff and lead to lower productivity.
Stay safe and hydrated this summer! ☀️💧 Remember to take breaks, seek shade, and listen to your body.

Important i formation… is your site a safe workplace?

SafeWork inspectors are ramping up checks on psychological heath and safety in NSW workplaces.

When inspectors respond to a request for service in organisations with 200 or more workers, including the public sector, they will now do a check to see if the workplace is meeting its duty to manage psychosocial hazards. This includes if the purpose of the visit is unrelated to psychological health and safety.

We will take regulatory action against any workplaces that do not comply.

To understand your responsibilities and ensure compliance, refer to SafeWork NSW’s 'Code of Practice: Managing psychosocial hazards at work': https://www.safework.nsw.gov.au/resource-library/list-of-all-codes-of-practice/codes-of-practice/managing-psychosocial-hazards-at-work

This is a strong message to not for profits … there is more excuse for failing to protect your workers… although a risk assessment is just a piece of paper to some, to me, its a tool for conversations and planning. If a worker knows a situation can happen and the controls in place for their safety then the likelihood of something happening is drastically reduced.

Marist Youth Care Limited (Marist) has been fined $300,000 for failing to comply with their health and safety duties and exposing two female workers to a risk of serious injury or illness over a charge period of nine months.

Marist is a not for profit non-government organisation that provides residential care for young persons. During the charge period, an adequate risk assessment was not completed by Marist addressing the risk of work related violence at residential care home, Joan House.

Over a period of nine months, workers reported that residents used sexually aggressive language toward them, made inappropriate comments, racial remarks and would engage in inappropriate touching and sometimes react unfavourably when asked to stop. Reports of these matters were recorded, but there were multiple failures at management levels to respond to them.

In 2019, two separate incidents of assault were reported by two female workers. Both workers suffered ongoing psychological injuries, as a result of these incidents.
