AUSSIE 21/22 GRAIN CROPS BIG AGAIN

The current moisture levels and the outlook for the coming 2021/22 Aussie grain winter crop are looking good in most areas so far and may well continue to improve. In the second update of the 2021/22 crop outlook, IKON has increased forecast production for the main crops significantly. Next year’s wheat crop, which is in the final stages of planting, has been increased by almost 1 million mt to 29.5 million mt, which is well above average, but still below last season’s stunning crop of 34.8 million mt. The second biggest grain crop is barley and the forecast there has been increased by just under 450,000mt to a solid 10.5 million mt, which will still be well below last year’s 13.2 million mt. The Aussie canola crop is the standout in this update as the crop has been increased by 1.1 million mt to 4.7 million mt due to the high global oilseed prices and optimal subsoil moisture levels in NSW and WA, encouraging planting at nearly record high levels. This put the canola crop above even last year’s massive (and at that time) record crop.

Following last season's stunning crop we expect national production to reach new record high of 4.7 million mt, while planting area is expected to land just under a record seen in 2012/13 season when 3.3 million ha was planted across the country. This shift to bigger canola production can be attributed to record high global prices and optimal subsoil moisture in NSW and WA prompting growers to plant at very high levels.

At the end of May we looked at the ASX200 in the GFC period as well as the COVID crisis so far. We fear the latest rally is a false start and over the last two weeks the pattern in COVID continue to be consistent with the pattern in the GFC.

The current recovery of ASX following the COVID drop looks very similar to the initial recovery after the GFC drop (see chart of ASX S&P200). Risk is now that the recovery is a false start like we saw in the GFC.

Weekly ethanol production for the week ending 22nd of May increased to 724 kbpd from 663 kbpd week prior - marking the 4th consecutive week of increased production but much lower than pre-pandemic levels (Chart 1). However, Apple Mobility Trend data suggests otherwise with driving reported at levels of pre-pandemic (Chart 2) - potentially signalling quicker recovery of ethanol than initially anticipated (https://www.apple.com/covid19/mobility).
