Is uncertainty the new normal for Australian business?

At our recent Economic Outlook webinar, Stephen Walters, Principal and Chief Economist at Optimal Economics, shared his perspective on the forces shaping Australia and the global economy.

Stephen's key takeaways for business leaders included:

🔵 Australia's productivity growth has averaged just 0.3% over the past decade, its weakest performance in more than 60 years.

🔵 Without stronger productivity growth, Australia will struggle to lift economic growth, improve living standards and manage inflation sustainably.

🔵 AI has the potential to be one of Australia's biggest productivity opportunities, particularly for organisations that move beyond experimentation and embed it into day-to-day operations.

🔵 Investment in data centres and AI infrastructure is emerging as a significant growth driver, creating opportunities for organisations that can successfully leverage technology and innovation.

🔵 For business leaders, the focus should remain on identifying growth opportunities while maintaining disciplined cost management in an environment of ongoing inflationary and wage pressures.

A key message from the discussion was that uncertainty is unlikely to disappear any time soon. Organisations that focus on productivity, innovation and adaptability will be best positioned to navigate change and capitalise on emerging opportunities.

Taking time to lift your head from the day-to-day and reflect on how the year has felt, not just what was achieved.

🔵 Acknowledge achievements
Many high achievers move straight on to the next challenge. Creating space to recognise what’s gone well builds confidence and clarity.

🔵 Learn with self-compassion
When things don’t go to plan, curiosity is more powerful than self-criticism. Reflection helps identify what to carry forward and what to let go.

🔵 Be intentional about leadership identity
Understanding the “gifts” and “costs” of how we lead today and being deliberate about how we want to show up in the future.

🔵 Small, consistent steps matter
Leadership growth doesn’t require big leaps. Small changes in habits and behaviours can make a meaningful difference over time.

This morning, Moir Group hosted the first of three CFO Women Connect breakfasts for 2026, in partnership with Sue Rosen, FCA, PCC.

It was a great morning, with a room full of experienced female CFOs and senior finance leaders coming together for an open and thoughtful discussion to start the year.

The session focused on leadership identity, taking time to look back on the year that’s been, recognising what’s gone well, learning from what hasn’t and thinking about how we want to show up as leaders in 2026.

A big thank you to Sue Rosen for leading another excellent session and to the women who joined us and shared their perspectives so openly. The experience in the room really showed in the discussion.

We genuinely value these conversations and the opportunity to bring senior finance leaders together. We will be sharing a few key takeaways from the session shortly.

Last week, we hosted the first in a series of four 'CFO Women Connect' breakfasts, in partnership with Sue Rosen, FCA, PCC. It was a fantastic session with a room full of female CFOs.

The focus of the discussion was leadership presence—taking the time to reflect on “How do I walk into the room?”, identifying strengths, and exploring “What are the stories that have shaped me?” and “What is one defining moment in my career that made me the leader I am today?”

The room was filled with energy, ideas, and a wealth of CFO experience.
