The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM)Competition has been hosted annually by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) since 2003, and includes over 200 universities globally. Synthetic Biology is the application of genetic engineering through creation of novel biological systems not normally seen in nature, by combining and improving on natural processes. The goal of the competition is to liken genetic engineering to creation of electrical circuits by using modular and interchangeable parts called BioBricks. Each project is an attempt to solve a real-world problem using these novel genetic technologies, and to contribute to a world-wide registry of standardised BioBrick parts.
