Cultivate Sponsorship Grow your talent with sponsorship

01/06/2026

Before any big conversation about pay or progression, Sam Trattles says you need three numbers in mind. Your dream outcome. Your ideal outcome. And your walk away.

The dream outcome should scare you to say out loud. That’s how you know it’s the right one to lead with.

Every leader wants to be liked. Nick Arcaro says that might be the wrong goal.

Being respected and being liked aren’t the same thing. Respected means people trust your values and your intent, even when the outcome isn’t what they hoped for. That’s a harder thing to build. And a more honest one.

“I think you’re great. I’ll fight for this for you.”

Two weeks later: “They said no. But I still think you’re great.”

If this sounds familiar, you’ve met the good cop, bad cop manager. Kat Tahka unpacks one of the most common ways these conversations go wrong and why blaming the system doesn’t teach anyone anything.

Most people wait too long to have the conversation. And when they finally do, they expect an answer by Friday.

Sam Trattles shares a number that reframes how you think about asking.

The average pay rise takes at least 12 weeks from the first conversation. That’s not a reason to wait. That’s a reason to start today.

Cultivate Conversations is officially here. Our new podcast series starts now.

We’re opening with this clip from Sam Trattles. One of her clients asked for $95k. Then in the same breath said she’d take $70. Nobody pushed back. Nobody said no. She talked herself out of $25,000 before the conversation had even started.

The number you say out loud shapes everything that follows. Don’t negotiate against yourself before the other side has had a chance to respond.

Mother’s Day just passed.

And we keep thinking about the working mothers we’ve sat across from in our sponsorship programs. Women who are exceptional at their jobs. Who are also running mental load marathons before they even open their laptops.

Picking up the kids. Hitting their targets. Carving out ten minutes for themselves. And quietly wondering: am I doing this well enough?
That guilt isn’t a personal failing. It’s the predictable result of a system that added flexibility without removing the barriers underneath.

Mentors talk to you. Sponsors talk about you when you’re not in the room.

For working mothers, who are literally not in the room more often, that’s the difference between being considered and being passed over while doing everything right.
The system wasn’t designed with you in mind. That’s worth naming. And worth changing.

Tag a working mother who needs to hear this today.

341,550 migrant women in Australia are working below their level of skill and qualification.

Engineers cleaning houses. Nurses working as kitchen hands. Psychologists waiting years for their paperwork to be acknowledged.

The new Activate Her Skills report from AMWA and SSI is a clear-eyed look at why. The barriers are systemic, but they are solvable.

It is a recognition gap, not a skills gap. And recognition is only the first hurdle. Sponsorship is the next one.

Credit to AMWA and SSI for centring women’s lived experience in the data.
