Have you heard of "VALUE-BASED SELF-CARE"?

Value-based self-care refers to the value one places on looking after themselves, compared to looking after everyone and everything else first. In a crisis, the "fight" motive kicks in, and leaders can put time and energy into looking after everyone else around them first - colleagues, team members, family, kids, friends. It can be seen as a badge of honour to be there for others first. You might relate to battling through your weekly schedule, only stopping to value your own self-care when you collapse tired on the weekend. Hoping to refuel on the weekend to do it all again.

The principle of Value-based Self Care is about choosing to show signs each and every day that you value your own self-care. How do your eating habits, physical activity levels, diary management reflect that you genuinely value yourself on a day to day basis. This is not about a selfish quest to put self first. Rather, it is about sustaining yourself, making sure you don't put your self-care last.

Value-based self-care is a powerful performance strategy that can achieve sustained levels of motivation, energy and mental clarity.

How could you get in a daily habit of 3 x 30-minutes each day where it is clear you are making a self-care choice? What changes could you implement to your routine to be more resourceful about self-care?

Resilience occurs right at the intersection between the current stress being experienced and your internal resources or ability to deal effectively with these pressures. It is for this reason that the best training ground to learn to swim in the tide of change and pressure, is in fact in amongst the stressor itself. NOW is an incredible time to learn about adversity and your internal ability to counter a range of stressors.

For many years I have worked with teams to build A-Game thinking, strategies and behaviours. We have successfully smashed records, scaled business, transformed culture and leadership. As COVID arrived, I like many of my clients have noticed that the inner-game of self-talk has become critical to performing in these times. It is for that reason that I have developed the program "Head-Talk". This virtual team session takes an inspiring look at many aspects of our unconscious response to COVID pressures.

Head-Talk motivates action through unlocking your internal resources, rising above your current routine to lean-in to powerful evidence-based mindset truths. Here are 3 top game-changers when it comes to managing stress during these prolonged periods of COVID lockdown.

TIP 1. Master the 'moments of interaction' you have with your support base. The quality of your interactions matters greatly right now. Through one-interaction at a time, your relationships can be easing your stress or adding to your stress. Be gentle on each other. Allow your thoughts and emotions to be seen. Show interest in each others personal nuances dealing with these stresses. Seek to validate and show that you 'get it'. Importantly, work hard on your communication to focus on describing yourself rather than venting frustrations at each other.

TIP 2. The quality of your sleep has never been so important. Finding periods of deep sleep has great power in recharging your batteries. Deep sleep allows the neural system to switch off and restore mental clarity and alertness. To improve sleep, one effective area of focus is your 60-minutes before bedtime. Set and alarm. Create a 60-minute unwinding routine before bed that includes a) NO SCREEN TIME, b) time tidying and nesting time around the house, and c) find stillness in breathing, stillness in thought, stillness in activity levels.

TIP 3. Develop a daily bias for more physical activity rather than less. In lockdown, flip 'waiting for the motivation to go for a walk' into 'going for walks because it gives me motivation'. Just 30 minutes of walking every day helps to significantly awaken the inner motivations. Not to mention, it's a great way to clear your head! Making time for physical activity has never been more important.
