The Sustained Happiness Model by Lyubomirsky, Sheldon and Schkade (2004) suggests that happiness is 40% intentional activity, so taking a moment to write a letter to someone you’re grateful for is a great way to intentionally express gratitude to someone you care about. 💌
In the spirit of intentional gratitude, here's a heartwarming exercise that aligns perfectly with the season of giving and appreciation ✍️
️⃣ Call into mind someone who did something you are grateful for – but maybe never fully expressed gratitude.
️⃣ Start with ‘Dear X…’ and be specific in terms of what this person did, why you are grateful and how this person’s behaviour affected your life.
️⃣ Try to be as concrete and grounded as possible.
️⃣ Describe what you are doing now and how often you remember their efforts.
️⃣ Plan how you will deliver it. If possible, deliver it in person. Let that person know you’d like to see them and have something special to share, but don’t reveal the exact purpose of the meeting.
️⃣ When you meet, let the person know that you are grateful to them and would like to read a letter expressing your gratitude.
️⃣ After you have read the letter, be receptive to their reaction and discuss your feelings together.
️⃣ Remember to give the letter to the person when you leave.
