Maximising Versus Satisficing: Choosing Happiness over Perfection For Your Mental Health

After a recent breakdown whilst packing my suitcase for a short trip away, I realised I am a “maximiser”. Where stakes are high, this can be a good thing, but trying to meet expectations and a level of perfectionism (that is impossible to achieve) also creates a lot of unnecessary stress. And for most decisions, the art of “satisficing” is a much healthier approach.

How To Survive A Long Marriage: The Dos and Don’ts

Like houses, relationships take time to build and success is usually determined by solid foundations, the way couples handle challenges along the way, how much effort you put in, and a genuine desire to succeed. And all that sounds great and everying but what it really translates into is a lot of hard work, on-the-job experience and a fair bit of adulting – which not all of us are good at. And at the same time, we’re fighting other fires like how to meet the needs of our kids or to pay the mortgage…

The Surprising Joys of “Invisibility”

As we watch Punch the monkey find his way in his new, often terrifying world, it is a visceral reminder of the pain of rejection. Remaining relevant in older age as a woman poses similar challenges, but I’m finally noticing some benefits to this new “invisibility” thing too.

Struggling to Embrace Retirement? 9 Ways To Fill the Extra Time

At one time, I couldn’t wait to be old enough to book one of those fancy-schmancy river cruises in Europe to sup on Champagne as local yodellers serenaded me from the shore. Now I can’t imagine anything worse.

Controversial Mental Health Tip No.1

Shows like these offer a lazy form of escapism which is appealing to anyone who struggles to switch off negative thought patterns. And losing myself in the relationship crises of a group of Gen Z wannabes seems a healthier strategy than downing several bottles of wine in an afternoon....

Surviving Christmas: 7 Top Tips For a Calmer Big Day

In my house, Christmas means dragging, kicking and screaming, the young adults in my family who have inherited the Grinch gene from my husband. And though I understand and respect why some people don't like Christmas, my response to that attitude is not on my watch, and definitely not at my Christmas table. Hence, despite one kid who hates our traditional Christmas lunch - which I insist upon, even though most of the time it is effing-hot degrees in Sydney - and one who despises Christmas games, I refuse to back down....

Nature's gentle awakening is usually followed by my not-so-gentle awakening from my puppy as he springs onto the bed with his crazy, infectious excitement for life. I am not a morning person, but it is hard to resist the look of certainty in his eyes that the day will be a good one, no matter what it holds....

That crazy decision was terrifying at the time but I do believe it made us stronger, more resilient, and gave us an incredible learning opportunity. It has given me more time to recover in the wake of family crises, more time for self-care and exercise - the best therapy for my brain - and the time to cultivate a fantastic community of friends and family. It has offered me freedoms that money can’t buy and taught me certain life lessons that I endeavour to pass onto my kids:...

Western society expects women to challenge the ageing process at every turn, whilst other cultures embrace it. We celebrate youth, influenced by celebrities like the Kardashions, under-nourished catwalk models, older men who date younger women - but thank you, Keanu Reeves, for bucking the trend - and actresses who "have work" to remain employed....
