A new service, team member, system or client can all look like growth. But what really matters is what that growth creates over time.

Leverage gives the business more capacity. It helps the business carry more without continually asking more from you.

Load does the opposite. It adds complexity, more decisions, more costs and more things that need ongoing attention.

Of course, some good investments create load at first. The question is whether that load is temporary and leading to future leverage, or whether it is simply becoming another permanent part of the business.

Before saying yes to the next opportunity, take a sec to ask if this will this eventually create leverage, or are we simply adding more load?

September in Queensland has a way of making everything feel like it is moving again, doesn't it? The days get longer, energy starts to shift, and it becomes a natural point to look at what has been working and what has not.

You can have a profitable business and still have a business that is costing you too much.

It might be costing you more time than you ever intended to give it, draining more energy than it should, and taking up far too much mental space. It might be eating into your evenings, your weekends and the time you thought business success would eventually give back to you.

The numbers can look great while the person behind them is running on empty. A successful business should add to your life, not continually ask you to sacrifice it. After all, what is the point of working so hard to create success if you never have the time or energy to actually enjoy it?

It can feel good to know that the team relies on you, the clients want you and you are the person who can fix the problem. But if nothing can move without you, you have not created freedom. You've created a dependant that's not going to "grow up" while you're doing everything.

You already know this, but it's worth the reminder... Your business can only grow as much as your capacity allows it to.

That means if every decision, every problem and every opportunity still comes back to you, the issue may not be that you need to work harder. It may be that the business needs to be designed differently.

Two things can be true. You can be deeply ambitious and still need an early night more than you need another late one. You can be genuinely proud of what you have built and still be honest that it is costing you more than it should right now.

Two things can be true. This season can require more from the business, and the next one can require more from your life, without either season making the other one wrong.

Owners often talk themselves out of one half of these statements, because holding both at once feels inconsistent. It is not inconsistent. It is simply true, and pretending otherwise is what makes the exhaustion feel like a personal failing instead of a normal part of running something real.
