A bit of a personal milestone.

I’ve officially completed my Graduate Diploma in Fire Safety Engineering at Western Sydney University.

Going back to university while continuing to run a business has certainly had its challenges, but I’ve really enjoyed expanding on the knowledge I’ve gained through many years working in hydraulic and fire protection engineering.

The course has given me a much greater understanding of the science behind fire behaviour, smoke movement, evacuation and fire protection systems and importantly, how all of those elements work together.

It’s also something we’re already putting into practice at Glenn Haig & Partners as we continue expanding our Fire Safety Engineering services.

The next step is already underway, with the Master of Fire Safety Engineering now well in progress.

One qualification finished onto the next one.

**Two days. Two very different buildings. One common goal... improving fire safety.**

The last couple of days have taken us across regional NSW working on two very different projects.

📍 **Lithgow – Ferrero Warehouse**

We've been engaged to undertake a comprehensive review of the existing fire protection systems after it was identified that no commissioning or baseline performance data was available for the sprinkler and hydrant systems.

Our role is to establish exactly how the systems perform today by documenting existing infrastructure, undertaking hydraulic assessments and determining the benchmark data required for future maintenance, upgrades and compliance.

📍 **Maitland – Imperial Hotel**

We're also assisting with a Council Fire Order for the historic Imperial Hotel.

The project involves assessing and designing upgrades including:

✅ Fire sprinkler systems
✅ Fire detection and alarm systems
✅ EWIS (BOWS) emergency warning system
✅ Street fire hydrant coverage
✅ Overall compliance strategy to satisfy Council requirements

Every building tells a different story.

Some require understanding what already exists before any decisions can be made.

Others require practical engineering solutions to bring older buildings up to today's fire safety standards while respecting their history.

This is the type of work we genuinely enjoy—working with owners, Councils and project teams to solve complex compliance issues and improve life safety outcomes.

Continuous professional development is critical in our industry particularly over the last 5 years with legislation changes. Alongside our practical experience across data centres, Aged Care, Residential and Industrial projects, I am pleased to have achieved FPAS Fire Systems Design Accreditation for all wet and dry fire services. This is another step in future proofing the business allowing our business capability to continue to grow.
