There’s a fine line between confidence and overconfidence. 😅

In a regulated environment, getting it wrong can cost more than admitting you need expert advice.

Know your limits. Ask the right questions. Get it right before it becomes a bigger problem.

Did you know? Under Australian AML/CTF law, if you suspect a transaction relates to terrorism financing or national security, you must submit a Suspicious Matter Report (SMR) to AUSTRAC within 24 hours. For all other suspect matters (such as money laundering or tax evasion), the statutory deadline is 3 business days.

Calling it an “admin fee” doesn't make it compliant.

Since 1 October 2026, card payment surcharges have been banned in Australia. But changing the name of a fee doesn't necessarily solve the problem.

A “processing fee”, “convenience fee” or last-minute checkout charge could still raise concerns under Australian Consumer Law if customers aren't shown the true price upfront.

The lesson for businesses? Be transparent about pricing. If your costs have increased, communicate that honestly rather than introducing unexpected charges at checkout.

Clear pricing protects more than your margins. It protects customer trust.

A compliance manual is only valuable when it becomes part of how your business operates, not when it’s sitting untouched on a shelf.

Many businesses have policies in place, but the real challenge is making sure teams understand them, follow them, and apply them every day.

Strong compliance comes from building habits, improving processes, and giving your team the confidence to make better decisions.

At ComplyEdge, we help Australian businesses turn compliance from a document requirement into a practical risk management tool.

Learn how to strengthen your compliance approach today.

Many businesses focus on completing transactions quickly, but overlooking small gaps in customer processes can create bigger challenges later.

A proactive approach means understanding your customers, maintaining accurate information, and building compliance into your everyday operations, not treating it as a last-minute requirement.

The businesses that prepare today are better positioned for tomorrow’s regulatory expectations.

ASIC’s current penalty framework demonstrates that corporate law breaches can carry substantial civil and criminal consequences. But the financial penalty is only one part of the exposure.

Businesses may also face remediation programs, customer impacts, management distraction, governance scrutiny, legal costs and long-term reputational consequences.

That is why compliance should be approached as risk management not as an exercise in avoiding a single number.

The better objective is to identify material exposure early and address it systematically.

Customer due diligence is often described as a process step. In practice, it is part of a wider risk decision.

How is the customer identified? What information is collected? How is beneficial ownership understood? How are higher-risk customers escalated? What happens when information changes? What evidence is retained?

A strong CDD framework connects onboarding, risk assessment, ongoing monitoring and escalation instead of treating identification as the finish line.

ComplyEdge can review the full control journey and identify where the process depends too heavily on people, assumptions or manual workarounds.

ASIC’s September 2026 financial advice update highlighted ongoing concerns around poor-quality advice on superannuation contributions and rollovers.

ASIC noted issues including failure to verify existing arrangements, inadequate consideration of client circumstances and insufficient documentation of inquiries and reasoning.

The control lesson extends beyond financial advice: regulated decisions should be based on appropriate information, supported by evidence and subject to effective supervision.

A request for information from a regulator can quickly become a cross-functional exercise involving legal, compliance, operations, technology and senior management.

The quality of the response depends on more than writing ability. It requires disciplined fact-finding, evidence preservation, issue assessment, ownership, consistency and a defensible remediation plan.

ComplyEdge supports businesses through regulatory correspondence, response packs, investigations, evidence structuring and remediation planning.
