Did you know that Instinct & Reason’s research helped inform the Australian Walking Track Grading System used across the country today?

We consulted 1,898 walkers to understand what people needed when choosing a track.

Of those surveyed, 97.3% said the proposed system would help them decide whether a walk was right for them.

Australians don’t think we’re in a recession. We’re just behaving like it.

Only 32% of Australians believe the country is in recession, compared with 48% across the 21 countries surveyed.

But 73% of Australian households say they are finding it harder to make ends meet than a year ago, while 54% are giving less to charity.

Could housing costs explain the gap between how Australians describe the economy and how they are actually spending?

Explore the findings in our carousel, then read the full post here:

Climate concern is going global, but not local.

New international research shows that 90% of people see climate change as a serious problem for the planet, but only 67% feel the same about their own local area.

That gap has nearly doubled in one year.

The encouraging news is that climate action remains widespread, with 81% of respondents taking at least one personal climate action in the past year.

This is the Proximity Paradox, where global concern is high, but the issue can still feel distant from everyday life.

Most NSW homes were built before modern thermal performance standards, so until now, little was known about how older homes actually rate.

Instinct and Reason partnered with NSW DCCEEW and the University of Wollongong on an Australian-first study assessing 1,014 pre-2004 homes.

The result? An average rating of just 2.1 NatHERS stars out of 10.

So if your home feels colder inside than places in far colder climates, you may be right.

Thank you to all participants, and to our Home Energy Assessment Coordinator and Recruiter, Didi, whose dedication helped make this important research possible.

Learn more:

Many homes built before 2004 do not meet modern energy standards under the NSW Building Sustainability Index (BASIX). This affects the home’s comfort, energy use and emissions. To help improve the energy efficiency and comfort of these homes, we commissioned a research project to collect data abou...
