Here's some really interesting findings relating to the energy consumption of our homes. Amongst lots of other useful stuff, they report "When combining thermal upgrades with electrifying hot water and cooking appliances, people living in detached houses could save on average between $1,850 and $2,200 a year off their energy bills. Occupants of townhouses could save between $1,270 and $1,480 a year, and occupants in apartments between $1,030 and $1,200 a year."

That's not peanuts and with the overall increases in cost of living we're all experiencing it's definitely worth paying attention and looking for where we can make a few changes to save environmental impact and money at home.

Australians are paying for low-performing homes through their energy bills. New ClimateWorks report makes a strong case for a renovation wave across the country.

If you've been getting out in the surf this summer and have started thinking that you are going to be needing a new wetsuit at some stage, Patagonia has created a new line of wetsuits that are made with sustainability, repairability and recyclability in mind. So read up about them now and keep it in mind ahead of time so that you don't end up buying the same old, same old. Sometimes identifying the real or perceived barriers to change, investigating any previously unchallenged biases that may exist, and then mapping out how to get over, under or around any current genuine barriers to the preferred change is a great way forward when you seem to be at a point with little or no progress. I find the 'My Efficient Electric Home' facebook group a valuable place to visit on a regular basis as there's so many interesting questions and informed responses and discussion around electrification and the general home energy efficiency ideas that tends to go hand in hand with it.

The drive for electrification of home/residential and commercial buildings is gaining speed at a surprising pace. This article from the founder of the My Efficient Electric Home group is a really useful exploration of what's currently stopping householders from moving forward - I'm sure you'll find some interesting and valuable tips in this piece!

Tim Forcey surveyed the My Efficient Electric Home Facebook group to understand the most common reasons stopping members from getting off gas.

Wow - we're all aware that the uptake of EVs in Australia is gaining speed - and it needs to - did you realise that fast-charge stations have doubled in number?

EVs made up just 2% of new car sales in May 2022, but now 8.3% of new car sales in 2023 are battery powered

If the 'compostable' serviceware isn't certified 'home compostable' and it has any bioplastics in it then it's just not going to get composted. I've composted, vermicomposted (worms) and processed with Black Soldier Fly Larvae so much organic waste from events in the past and the bioplastic lines in the cups always end up floating around in the finished compost like little ghost cups. It takes serious commercial composting processing to break them down but almost all commercial composters don't want anything to do with this waste stream - it's very difficult to ensure that organic waste stream where the compostable cups would be collected and transported does not contain *any* non-compostable cups. It can be done but it requires absolute vigilance with the vendors on site to not bring the wrong products in and also absolute vigilance to keep patrons from carrying in the very same coffee cups purchased from outside the venue.

So in my opinion compostable coffee cups in particular aren't a viable solution - even if it's 'compostable' if there isn't a rock solid plan for *who* and *how* it's going to be composted then it's going to end up in landfill with all of the rest of the single use products. Reuse is the real solution we need to race towards as fast as we can.

Sold and marketed as environmentally friendly, compostable food packaging has been exploding in popularity in Australia. But is it any better than the plastic it's replaced?

Even though we have to keep ratcheting up the pressure for progress on addressing human induced global heating from a climate change perspective we've got to keep in mind that those climate changes, plus the pressures that our increasing global population brings, are also putting a lot of pressure on our fellow travellers on this planet. If we don't keep enough attention on species extinction then our kids are going to have a much less stable ecosystem to inherit and pass on to their kids. We have to be careful to not slip into a carbon focused tunnel vision.

As our energy bills keep rising it's important to keep in mind that we're at a notable turning point as far as decarbonisation and full electrification of our homes goes. There's lots of rebate programs available for NSW home owners at the moment but before you pull the trigger on a big scale purchase to achieve greater efficiencies and improved thermal comfort of your home it's important to do a little research on which of the makes and models might be best for you. Yes you can take advice from retailers and installers but keep in mind that they will usually want to sell you the products that they want to move for their own business benefits. You'd still get a great solution but to avoid any potential buyer's remorse it's a great idea to be better informed and 100% happy with the installer and the product that you end up going with.

Most Aussie homes are not suited to the current climate, let alone future extremes. But they can be upgraded. A new report identifies the most common housing types and benefits of renovating.
