If you are moving to Australia soon, here is an honest question:

Are you preparing for the visa… or preparing for life and employment after arrival?

We are developing a structured 1-hour online session focused specifically on cultural and employment readiness in Australia.

Topics include:
• Understanding Australian Culture: Communication style – Workplace expectations – Social integration
• Employment Insights: How hiring works – Resume & LinkedIn expectations – Networking strategies
• Settlement Essentials: Housing & cost of living – Banking, Medicare, MyGov – First 30-day checklist
• Student Specific Tips: Balancing work & study – Internships & part time jobs

This will be a small-group session capped at 25 participants.

Before launching publicly, we are gathering “Expressions of Interest” to ensure the content aligns with real concerns and expectations.

If this is relevant to you, share your input here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScdTr9UPW2hrjwCt3OFwDRc6cOAEev0kgZoRBeKyjSlussvUQ/viewform?usp=header - Feel free to tag someone who may benefit.

Overseas Experience Isn’t Ignored. It’s Often Untranslated.

If you’re a skilled migrant arriving in Australia, this may already feel familiar.
You bring real experience. Real skills. Real results.
Yet your background doesn’t always land the way it should.

That’s not about your capability.
It’s a translation gap - and it’s exactly the gap SettleDown Under was created to address.

Here’s how to close it without diminishing who you are:

✔ Lead with outcomes, not titles
Job titles don’t always travel well. Results do.
Focus on the problems you solved, the decisions you made, and the impact you delivered.

✔ Anchor your experience to the Australian context
Employers need to see how you’d operate here.
Link your experience to safety, customers, governance, compliance, or risk.

✔ Demonstrate adaptability early
Short contracts, local certifications, volunteering, or pilot roles send a strong signal:
“I don’t just have experience - I can apply it in Australia.”

✔ Shape a clear professional narrative
Your resume should answer one quiet but powerful question:
Why does this experience work in Australia?

At SettleDown Under (www.settledownunder.com.au), this is the work we do every day - helping skilled migrants translate their experience into confidence, clarity, and credible local opportunities.

You don’t need to erase where you come from.
You need the right support to make your value unmistakable.

👉 What part of your experience have you found hardest to explain since arriving?

Most people talk about getting to Australia.

Not enough talk about what helps you stay, grow and truly belong once you’re here.

Here is a month on month plan to help you migrate and settle better in Australia and how you should plan your first 90 days.

If this resonates, have a read and tag someone who should be part of this conversation 🤍

Migrant Truth #4

Starting again reshapes identity.

Settlement isn’t just practical. It reshapes how people see themselves professionally and personally. That adjustment deserves patience and compassion.

Growth often feels uncomfortable before it feels empowering.

Migrant Truth #3

The hardest questions are the quiet ones.

Most newcomers don’t struggle with forms. They struggle with questions like: Am I doing this right? Am I missing something obvious? These questions are rarely voiced, but deeply felt.

Silence doesn’t mean you’re failing.

Migrant Truth #2

Being skilled does not equal being settled.

Many migrants arrive highly capable, yet feel uncertain in Australian workplaces. Confidence takes time to rebuild in a new context. This is not a capability gap, it’s a context gap.

Capability travels. Context takes time.

Migration Truth #1

Arrival is exciting. Settlement is quieter and harder.

Most people prepare for visas and flights. Fewer prepare for the emotional shift that comes after the adrenaline fades. The second month is often harder than the first. This is normal, but rarely talked about.

If you’ve felt this, you’re not behind.

Why SettleDown Under exists 🤍

Nearly 20 years ago, Mohana Nirmala Dhoble and I arrived in Australia with a couple of bags and a lot of hope.

Like many migrants, we were excited to start fresh, but quickly realised how overwhelming those early days could be. New systems, unfamiliar work culture, unspoken rules, and a constant feeling of wondering if you’re doing things the right way.

What we struggled with most wasn’t paperwork. It was the lack of clear, honest guidance and the quiet loneliness that can come with starting over in a new country.

Over time, Australia became home. We built careers, friendships, and a life we’re deeply grateful for. But we never forgot how uncertain those early days felt.

Over the years, friends, family members, and newcomers kept reaching out with the same questions:
“Where do I start?”
“Is this normal?”
“Why does this feel harder than I expected?”

SettleDown Under was created because of those conversations.

This page is for migrants, families, and international students who are preparing to move to Australia, or who have just arrived and need reassurance, clarity, and practical guidance from people who’ve lived the journey themselves.

Settlement isn’t just about ticking boxes. It’s about confidence, belonging, and feeling steady enough to move forward.

If you’re new here, welcome. You’re not alone, and we’re glad you found us 🤍
