This past week at Tanunda we got to try a few different things! Two of our members had expressed interest in wearing Breathing Apparatus, so we gave them the opportunity to try a set on with the guidance of some of our other operators.

Then, we held an extra training night, visiting Nuriootpa CFS Brigade to observe their RCR training in action. They even involved our members, asking us to secure the roof of the vehicle and assist in removing the occupant (dummy) from the vehicle.
It was a great opportunity to learn! Thank you to Nuri for having us!

Tonight’s question:
How many uses does a salvage sheet have?

Turns out a lot!

Apart from the red and green for BA jobs, salvage sheets can become a water diversion, water dam and a HAZMAT decontamination pond.
Other uses are to cover houses & items from water damage.

After practicing the various folds and uses, we were given the challenge of turning the salvage sheet over without anyone stepping off.
Final challenge: flipping over a tiny tarp with 5 members.
This exercise highlights the importance of teamwork and communication.

What do we do when it’s too cold outside?

We were given a “pager message” with a map and a few small pieces of information. Crews worked together to navigate the scenario and think of all possible aspects of scene safety and incident management from the point of view from a crew leader and members including the initial approach through to the completion of the “incident”.

AusAlert community information session - Nuriootpa, Thursday 16 July.

The Australian Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency, is introducing AusAlert, Australia’s new national emergency messaging system.

SAFECOM is hosting a free community information session in Nuriootpa to help local residents, businesses, community groups and service providers understand what AusAlert is, how it works, and what to expect.

Session details:
WHERE: Nuriootpa Soldiers Memorial Hall, 46 Murray Street, Nuriootpa
WHEN: Thursday 16 July 2026 | 3:15 pm to 5:15 pm

The session will include a presentation, opportunity to ask questions, and information to take away. Staff from the South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission will be available to speak with attendees.

Topics will include:
• What AusAlert is and how it works
• What a Critical Alert is
• What to expect during the national test on 27 July
• What compatible mobile devices may do when the test alert is sent

About the test on 27 July:
There will be a nationwide test of Australia's new emergency warning system on Monday 27 July at 1.30pm ACST. It will arrive on every compatible mobile phone and smart watch as a loud Critical Alert, even if that device is set to silent or Do Not Disturb. Each device will play a siren-like warning sound for about 10 seconds. Devices will vibrate and an AusAlert message will appear on device screens. It will clearly say it is a test.
There will be no emergency and no action will be required.

What did you get up to on the weekend? Recently the members here at Tanunda held a working bee to get the station ship shape for another year. From little jobs like making sure the bins are empty through to cleaning the truck bay & gardening, many hands make light work!

Recently here at Tanunda we held our AGM.
It is a great opportunity to not only carry out a formal meeting - with this year being an election year - but also reflect and celebrate all the brigade and its members have achieved over the last 12 months.

Congratulations to all members elected into positions for the next 2 years, and to all members we celebrated achievements with!

We recently had two members attend an Operate Pumps course. Tonight they shared their knowledge and ran through the pump. This gave us a chance to set up a ground monitor and practice transitioning from tank water to ground water.

Tonight we held the Annual Group Cadet Quiz night!
Questions are based on their training and general knowledge of the CFS.
Congratulations Tanunda Cadets taking out the win.

This photo was taken after the completion of a Mental Health First Aid Course at our station. It was the first time Jana (absolute legend) had held one of these courses where every attendee was from the one brigade. We are proud to say over 50% of our members hold a MHFA certificate and we thrive on open communication between all members and “checking in” on a regular basis. A fantastic tool/training to have - thank you all who support it!
