In the 1930s, Alan Robb Hickinbotham helped lay the foundations for modern Australian winemaking-bringing knowledge, science & education to the industry.

Generations later, his great grandson Alan Hickinbotham is writing his own chapter in the Barossa.

92 points ~ Biscay Road BV Shiraz 2024 ~ “From the Barossa Valley, the w**e is matured for a year and a half in French oak puncheons. An opaque maroon/purple, the nose reveals aromas of chocolate, dried herbs, plums, blackberries, to***co leaves, coffee beans and mocha. A really gorgeous nose. The w**e is of medium length, mid-weight, and offering a line of fine acidity with decent balance throughout. It concludes with sleek tannins, and it is noticeable that there is a gentle contribution from the oak. Enjoy this over the next six to eight years, over which time we can expect further improvement”. Review by ken gargett of Winepilot

92 points ~ Biscay Road GSM 2025 “Dark in the glass, but there’s a lacy, silky thing going on here that lights up the stage. This is a great GSM from Biscay Road Wines.

Southern Barossa fruit brings berry pie, dark cherries and squishy blueberries, with soft exotic and black pepper spice gradually building momentum. There’s impressive flow through the palate, with balance keeping all that fruit and spice beautifully in check. It’s the kind of GSM that quietly gets on with the job, offering generosity without losing its sense of shape or finesse. And as tends to be the modus operandi here, you can bang the bargain drum. AU$25, 14.5% alcohol, Barossa Valley.

“This Barossa red was matured in French oak but it tastes mostly of pure, fresh, well-ripened shiraz grapes. That’s a very good thing, and the reason that I like this w**e so much. The flavours here are in the redcurrant, plum, mint and anise spectrum, with floral, to***co and sweet spice notes as highlights. It’s an easy w**e to like and indeed to appreciate.
