Journeyman Planning A fresh consultancy servicing both the public and private sector with the focus being solely on town planning services and in particular statutory planning

Journeyman Planning is a fresh consultancy providing services to both the public and private sectors with the focus being solely on town planning services and in particular statutory planning. The Principal Consultant of Journeyman Planning is Angus McGuckian who is responsible for the day to day activities of the company and who will co-ordinate the contract and undertake the assignments. Angus c

ommenced his career with the Department of Main Roads in Queensland after completing his Bachelor of Environmental Planning (with Honours) where he coordinated the Departments input into 17 new format planning schemes under the Integrated Planning Act for the Darling Downs Region. Moving to Melbourne in 2002, Angus commenced with Yarra Ranges Council where over 15 years he progressed to where, upon his departure recently, he was the Executive Officer of Planning Services. This time at Yarra Ranges has provided Angus with an extensive knowledge of a variety of complex planning issues from intensive commercial developments under Development Plan overlays to major tourism developments in the Yarra Valley to complex dwelling applications on heavily vegetated, bushfire and landslip prone properties. This is coupled with an in-depth involvement of the review and evolution of a complicated planning scheme and a complicated decision making environment. After 20 years’ experience in town planning at both state and local government tiers in various Australian states, his passion is about assisting local government planners to achieve quality decisions and outcomes and working with the applicant to achieve credible development that meets the community’s needs. Angus adopts a collaborative approach to his work and loves to engage early and thoroughly on issues to ensure a complete response is provided.

I did a thing! After 7 years and 9 months of running Journeyman Planning I have driven to work! I have moved myself moved into a proper office and even have a logo at the door!

I am now based of Hills HQ which is a coworking space in Tecoma. It’s a great space setup by Yarra Valley Architects who I have worked with previously and also houses Ranges Environmental Consulting which is run by an old council colleague of mine. Also helpful that there is a number of psychologists here too!

Feels like a comfortable fit for me and has me out “peopling” again. I have missed working amongst others and it will be good to have that transition to work even though it’s a five minute drive. It’s close enough to even walk; at least when the weather is better.

Very pleased to have represented a passionate group of objectors in supporting Yarra Ranges Council's refusal of a supermarket multi use development in Belgrave on a very difficult site adjacent to Puffing Billy. The Tribunal, after a mammoth 16 days of hearing over three tranches, has resolved to uphold Council's refusal. Well done to Yarra Ranges Council for mounting a thorough defence of its decision and to Adeline Lane for her excellent representation.

This site is, however, going to continue to be a challenging site to develop and it will be interesting to see what future proposals it might attract.

Journeyman Planning had the pleasure in assisting Phil Sexton and CUB in securing planning approvals for the new micro-brewery on this site. I look forward to seeing what the finished brewery experience is like (read - having a nice cold one). Many thanks to the planning team and economic development team at Yarra Ranges for being so proactive and engaging on this project!

CUB has struck a deal with one of the founding fathers of Australia's craft brewing industry, Phil Sexton, to establish a craft brewery in the Yarra Valley.

A great decision from the Tribunal overturning Yarra Ranges Council's decision to grant a planning permit for an inappropriate rural subdivision in the beautiful Lysterfield Valley despite an officer recommendation for refusal.

Thank you to the passionate and watchful objectors from the Friends of the Glenfern Green Wedge Inc and the Green Wedges Guardian Alliance Inc for engaging me to present their case. It was very validating to have had the decision overturned.

Working from a co-working space in the CBD for the day. It’s great to be around people and activity as I miss this working by myself. Anyone else working from a flexible work space?

Another appeal concluded on Wednesday for a local government client. It was an objector appeal however it was a very convivial affair with the objector and owner on good terms. It's great when it's about the issues and people can get involved in the process.

Loving being back in front of the Tribunal.
