The town is in the Rural City of Benalla local government area, 247 kilometers northeast of the state capital Melbourne. Thoona has a school (1878 - 2015), a handsome general store, a hotel, two churches, a hall, and a recreation reserve. At the turn of the century, it also had a butter factory (1889), brickworks, foundry, mechanics' institute, bakery and dramatic and choral societies. The village

Human cases of H5 bird flu are very rare and it has not been shown to spread from person to person.
Those who work with or care for birds are more likely to be exposed to H5 bird flu because they have closer and more frequent contact with birds than most people.
Getting your seasonal flu vaccination is strongly recommended. It reduces the risk of becoming seriously ill if you are exposed to both seasonal flu and bird flu at the same time.
Flu vaccinations are available at your chemist, GP, Council or Aboriginal health service.
REPORT sick or dead wildlife online through the Agriculture Victoria website: agriculture.vic.gov.au/birdflu

Good biosecurity is one of the best ways to protect your chickens from H5 bird flu.

While there are currently no detections in Victoria, now is a good time to review your setup.

Start with these simple steps.

✅ Keep feed and water away from wild birds
✅ Keep your birds away from dams, ponds and wild bird areas
✅ Use netting, roofing or fencing where practical
✅ Wear clean boots and clothes when entering poultry areas

If you notice something unusual, talk to your local vet or call the Emergency Animal Disease hotline on 1800 675 888.
