The Migration Amendment (Combatting Migrant Exploitation) Act 2026 has been enacted, introducing changes to Australia’s employer sponsorship framework to improve transparency and accountability. A major update allows the Department to publicly publish information about approved work sponsors, including sponsor names, ABN details, sponsorship types, nomination numbers, and nominated occupations.

The amendment signals a stronger focus on monitoring sponsor activity and preventing migrant exploitation. Businesses participating in the migration program may face increased public scrutiny, making compliance, accurate record-keeping, and proper sponsorship practices more important than ever. Advisers are encouraged to ensure clients understand the potential reputational and compliance impacts of this new public disclosure framework. The Act will commence on a date set by Proclamation or automatically within six months of receiving Royal Assent.

The Australian Government has introduced new changes to Parent visa application lodgement processes through the Migration (Arrangements for Parent Visa Applications) Instrument 2026, effective from 22 April 2026. The update expands online application options for several Parent visa subclasses, including Parent, Aged Parent, Contributory Parent, and Contributory Aged Parent visas, allowing applicants to lodge applications digitally instead of relying mainly on paper submissions.

However, some temporary contributory Parent visa subclasses must still be submitted in paper form. The changes are designed to improve efficiency, simplify processing, and reduce dependence on postal or courier services as Australia continues moving toward a more digitised migration system. Transitional arrangements also apply for applications posted before 22 April 2026 but received afterwards, making lodgement timing important.

The Australian Government has expanded the Australian Immi App to 13 additional countries, including Sri Lanka, from 24 March 2026, bringing the total coverage to 47 countries under the Offshore Biometric Collection Program. The app allows eligible visa applicants to submit facial biometrics and passport details directly through their smartphones, reducing the need to visit biometric collection centres. Applicants must have previously provided biometrics to the Department and hold a valid passport to use the service. Since its launch in September 2024, the app has seen strong user adoption and satisfaction, with further expansion planned across Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa, Mekong, and South Asia throughout 2026.
