The final report from our Best Practice Review of the model Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws is now available 📄

The report makes 21 recommendations to maintain and strengthen national harmonisation, provide consistency in compliance and enforcement, reduce work-related fatalities, and ensure the WHS system is equipped to respond to challenges such as AI, climate change and harmful behaviours.

Thank you to all of you – workers, families, businesses, unions, regulators, experts and community representatives who shared your insights and experiences throughout the Review process. Your contributions helped shape the recommendations.

The recommendations will now be progressed through Safe Work Australia's tripartite Member processes, with further consultation and policy development undertaken where required.

It's critical you de-energise the power before entering a roof space.

Why? Roof spaces can contain live electrical wiring and other hidden hazards.

Every year, Queenslanders working in domestic roof spaces are seriously injured—or worse—because the power wasn’t turned off.

Under Queensland Electrical Safety laws, persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) and workers must ensure that before they are carrying out work in or otherwise entering the roof space of a domestic building:

✅ the relevant electrical installations for the building are de-energised by turning off all the power at the main switchboard
OR
✅ a prescribed circumstance applies and additional safety requirements are complied with.

This applies when you're entering a roof space to remove possums, relocate snakes, or investigate rodent activity. Don't take the risk—turn the power off.

Safe Work Month is a reminder that workplace health and safety is about more than preventing physical injuries, it's also about protecting psychological health and supporting recovery when injuries occur.

Secondary psychological injury may be due to the ongoing impact of the primary injury or exposure to stressors during the rehabilitation and return to work process. These injuries are increasing across Australia and can have a significant impact on rehabilitation and return to work outcomes, leading to higher claim costs.

These injuries often arise when a worker feels unsupported and disconnected from the workplace, uncertain about their recovery, or excluded from decisions that affect them.

You can help prevent secondary psychological injury by:

🧠 Managing psychosocial hazards in the workplace
📞 Early, supportive contact after an injury
💬 Clear, respectful and empathetic communication
💙 Psychological recovery matters
🤝 Worker involvement in rehabilitation and return to work planning
🌱 Psychologically safe workplaces where workers feel heard, valued and supported

This Safe Work Month, take the opportunity to reflect on how your workplace supports both physical and psychological recovery.

For workers living with a chronic condition, returning to work can mean navigating ongoing pain, fatigue, treatment appointments and changing capacity. That's why successful return to work plans need flexibility, regular review and a focus on long term sustainability.

Employers can make a significant difference through adjusted hours, modified duties, regular check-ins and supportive workplace practices.

Supporting workers with chronic conditions involves creating an environment where people can perform and contribute at their best, safely and confidently.

The benefits extend beyond the individual:
❤️‍🩹 Better health outcomes
🙌 Improved employee engagement
🎓 Retention of valuable skills and experience
🌏🤝 More inclusive workplaces

Return to work is not just about recovery, it's about creating a pathway for long term sustainable outcomes.

Take a closer look at how to identify risks in your workplace.

Every business has hazards – some obvious, like slippery or hot surfaces, and others are not so obvious such as chemical exposure, role clarity and even shift patterns.

You can protect your workers, meet your legal responsibilities and create a safer, more productive workplace by asking your workers to identify some obvious and not so obvious hazards, with the healthy work survey: https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au/safety-and-prevention/health-and-wellbeing/healthy-work-survey

At Bob's Garage, support doesn't have to look like a waiting room. Sometimes it's a log around a fire pit, a coffee at the bench, or a few honest words with someone who's been there.

You don't need to have it all figured out to walk through the door.
