🐾 Exploring the Impact of Pets in Aged Care
Research suggests that incorporating pets into residential aged care can have therapeutic benefits for individuals living with dementia (Travers et al., 2013). As part of MOA Benchmarking's "Emotional, Spiritual, & Psychological Wellbeing" audit for March 2023, we examined the connection between pet access and emotional support for consumers.
While it's important to note that the aged care services included in this audit may not represent Australia as a whole, the relationships observed between the questions are likely to hold true to some extent. Out of the 3,088 responses received, a significant 88% of consumers indicated that they were allowed to keep or be visited by a pet. This proportion is visualized as a waffle plot below.
Supporting consumer choice is undeniably beneficial, as it empowers individuals to make decisions aligned with their preferences. This brief analysis provides some further evidence that consumers who have the opportunity to keep or be visited by pets feel their emotional and psychological wellbeing is adequately supported. This can be observed in the column chart, where a higher proportion of consumers who were allowed contact with pets responded "agree" or "strongly agree" to the statement "the home supports my emotional and psychological wellbeing.“
These findings support the significance of pets in aged care. By facilitating pet interactions, we can enhance the overall quality of life for older people in care, promoting their emotional and psychological wellbeing. Let's continue to prioritise consumer-centred care and empower individuals to make choices that foster happiness and contentment.
